The full name of this series is Sword Art Online Alternative: Gun Gale Online. But that’s a bit too much to put on the title line.
So anyway. Remember the second season of SOL? Kirito entered a new virtual reality game to discover why people who die in the game also die in real life. Since it is just a game, no one should die for real. This series returns us to that game, Gun Gale Online. Only this time there is no Kirito, no Asuna, and none of the other SOL characters. Instead we get an entirely new cast.
Karen is a college student with an image problem. She is self-conscious about her above average height, longing to be small and cute. To escaper her reality, Keren begins to play the virtual reality games and gives herself an avatar of a small, cute girl she names LLenn. Eventually Karen/Llenn finds GGO, that’s Gun Gale. At first she is repulsed by the violence, though it is just a game, but soon she is a GGO aficionado with the reputation of being a ruthless killer.
Karen/Llenn meets other players, not the least of which is the somewhat insane Pito. Not that the others in the game are sane. This is quite a violent series. The final confrontation between Llenn and Pito is. . . . Let’s just say it sets a new standard.
The animation is better than average. The writing is good. There are some great characterizations. But the level of violence should put this anime beyond the level for children.
I enjoyed Sword Art Online Alternative: Gun Gale Online. If you can take make-believe bloodletting, you may enjoy it as well. It's currently on Netflix streaming.
