Aired where? Adult Swim? I think ZLS is too foreign for the casual TV watcher. All the nerds who like anime will have already seen it and all the edgy kids who watch AS will just think "what the f*ck is this"

Well, predicting whether a show will be popular in an entire CONTINENT is difficult. It's not even guaranteed that every single separate country will have a channel that picks it up. If it was just the UK or something then, well, maybe it could be successful, but again, anime fans don't go to the telly to watch anime, and people who have never heard of anime will just be confused or turned off.
Cowboy Bebop was successful because it was a very western show aired in a time when anime wasn't as accessible as it is today, so the international community couldn't simply watch it online and therefore a TV slot could be justified.
