Did they mess up Kemono Friends? Spoiler warning

I wanted to discuss this seasons plus last season. That why I put spoiler warning in the title.

What I mean by messing up, they ended the 1st season with them all supposedly going to another island. I was expecting it to continue from that point. It didn't continue. The 2nd season or should I say reboot started years later base on the first episode.

So what happen to Kaban & friends? Did they find any other humans? If it is in the manga please spoil it.

I am not sure I saw the specials based on Season 1.

I like the second season, so far longer episodes. It is a new story line.
