Care to read about a gritty crime anime? One full of gangsters, mob bosses, and corruption? The you’d better go somewhere else, because Back Street Girls is not that anime.
The premise of Back Street Girls is pretty simple. Three yakuza screw up and anger their boss. So as punishment, they all undergo a sex change and now make money for the family as a female pop singing group. On the outside, they are cute young girls, but on the inside they are yakuza all the way.
So this is bound to lead to hilarious situations, right? It would, if the jokes and gags weren’t lame. Then again, that’s only because the writing seems to be lame. You can pretty much guess how each story will work out, which will at least keep your mind off the fact you aren’t laughing. This was meant to be a dumb, but fun anime. We do get the dumb.
If the bad stories aren’t enough, the animation is worse. The artwork is good, but wasted as the characters are stiff and lifeless. There is also an overuse of stills. This series would have to double its budget to be done on the cheap. Then when the artists feel overworked, rather than continue to draw the characters and action, they just show a picture of the moon or a light fixture as the dialog continues. Why bother?
Well, actually there is some good animation in the opening credits. But after that, there is nothing to see. As far as hearing, get ready for a stream of profanity in each episode. Well, they are yakuza, so I guess that is to be expected.
Anyway, forget Back Street Girls.
