Cool Godzilla: The Planet Eater (2018)

This is it. The finale of the anime Godzilla trilogy. Part three supposedly closes the book on the tale of humans trying to reclaim Earth from that big reptilian monster. But Godzilla: The Planet Eater does suffer in the end with a rather confusing ending. Though after the credits role, one additional scene seems to put it all right.

Godzilla: The Planet Eater is very much a story of betrayal. Galu-gu, leader of the Bilusaludo, betrays his human allies demanding Haruo be held responsible for the failure to kill Godzilla, and for the deaths of his comrades. Metphies of the Exif betrays the humans and the native Houtuas by inspiring a religious movement. Metphies’ plan is to call upon his god to destroy Godzilla – and the planet Earth, all remaining humans, and the Houtuas. Can Godzilla save the world? Wait a minute! Godzilla saves the world? Maybe, if he survives. No sure bets here.

Politics plays its way through the first half of the film, as Godzilla takes a nap. Half-way through, Mr. Lizard wakes up and the real battle starts. But it all rests on Haruo, his personal demons, and if he can shake off Metphies’ influence.

As with the first two films of the series, there is some great artwork and animation. The characters come alive. The story is effectively drawn out to increase the tension. Everything is at risk, and nothing is guaranteed as humanity’s future is either altered or canceled out for all time.

All three movies are available on Netflix Streaming. They are worth checking out.
