Red face How do you manage sleepless nights?

Well guys, I just had a curious question.. how do you handle your sleepless nights? Is there anything in particular that you do? A routine, a movie, songs that you may listen to? Drop a line.. if there is any one left alive out there.

Me for one.. I don't have any one special thing. Sometimes I can throw on a podcast and listen until I pass out, or Ill go to some of my favorite YouTube channels and find some relaxing beats to mellow me out. Other days I just cant shut my mind off, so I skip from platform to platform just killing time. But nights like tonight, where I feel my creative juices flowing, I just want to keep typing, my mind racing with ideas..but I know for my bodies sake, I need to get some shut eye. My problem tonight is shutting my brain off and I don't have any thing that is remedying the situation. Maybe, I can get some ideas from anyone left in the AF community that still read these.

I do the same things. YouTube is too good when it comes to music, trailers, anime, western cartoons, funny videos, among other things. I’m a writer of nearly 21 years, so I go through my collection of new and old works from my younger years. I listen to music too, and write catchy songs to make what I do meaningful. Sleepless nights for me are rare, though, but that’s what I do when they sneak up on me. lol

I have had trouble sleeping a lot recently. I just use the lack of sleep every few days to get a good night's rest.

A lot of good sitcoms are on the channel TV Land. If you can’t sleep, a good laugh for a few hours might do the trick.

When I was working overnight shifts from 8pm to7am.. sleeping normally wasn't an option.. I would get 4hrs a night. That was on a good day. After so many of those kinds of sleepless nights I would crash really hard on my days off. I could easily sleep for 11hrs to a whole "day" on crash days. Its very unhealthy.

When I can't sleep (which is often), I sometimes take that as an opportunity to do a job that I really, really hate and have persistently put off for that reason--like cleaning my oven or filling a tax form. I mean, I might as well; it's not like I can do anything useful while I'm asleep anyway.

Off-topic side-note: This one time when I did manage to sleep, I had this awful dream of someone breaking into my house and stealing my stuff. He was armed, but I was having none of it and somehow managed to conjure a Katana out of nowhere. But just as I was about to take a swing I suddenly woke up. For some reason I was annoyed that I wasn't able to "teach that guy a lesson", so I went back to sleep to finish the job (and it worked!).

I think a lot about it is about sleep hygiene. Most of the examples were good ones. However, if a person doesn't have a routine they follow to help them tune into a restful mood then it would likely result in a lot of restless nights. It's also not about how well(or badly) you sleep. It's your attitude about sleep. If you're constantly worried about "Oh my gosh, it's 3am. Time to countdown before I have to get up at 6" then you're creating unneeded anxiety. Part of it is letting go of the idea that sleep absolutely needs to happen because then you'll be in the wrong mind/bodyset to reach your goal. I'm sure there are sites of examples of how to keep a healthy sleep hygiene. There were good ones given here already.

Relaxing music is always a nice thing to listen to to help you fall asleep. Listen to Jia Peng Fang's music, especially "Silent Moon." The erhu is a beautiful instrument that makes beautiful sounds. Also, you can try listening to the band Dream Theater. At the beginning of a lot of their songs, a guy tells you to relax and close your eyes and do this and that... you get my point. Its a good idea not to stare into a screen (PC monitor or tv). Put the music on your mp3 player. or whatever it is people in touch with the 21st century use these days. Make sure you're comfortable laying down. Buy a cooling gel pillow and mattress topper. I often find being too hot is uncomfortable. Believe it or not, I use a bed sheet as a blanket, because actual blankets are too thick and I heat up easily. Reading a book helps. Also taking a relaxing hot bath or shower helps too.

Oh, Hi-deeki, imagine... your kind not eating raw fish! ^_^

When I was younger I used to listen to music to fall asleep on my CD player - something about the sound of music surrounding me in my room always relaxed me enough to put me to sleep. My husband can't sleep with sound though so sometimes I listen to music on my headphones (which is a little uncomfortable and since I sleep on my side the headphones always get in the way) but usually I'll just get up, heat some water for tea, and play around on the computer with some soft light in the room while I drink said tea until I feel tired again.

If I get on my phone or other blue light right in my face I find it always makes it harder or impossible to sleep so I avoid doing that.
