Thumbs up Castlevania, Season 2 (2018)

OK now, where did we leave off?

Season one of Castlevania was a warm up. Now the action really starts.

Trevor Belmont is going after Dracula, aided by Sypha, a young women magician from The Speakers, and Dracula’s half-human son Alucard. Meanwhile, Dracula has gathered his vampire generals to wage a war of genocide against humanity, as vengeance for the burning of his wife. We get more of the backstory before the blood starts flowing – and between the profanity, there is a lot of blood. Meanwhile, there is treachery in the vampire ranks as not everyone is loyal to the dark lord Dracula, who actually seems sick of the whole affair.

    So much for the premise.

Once again, I mention this American production is made with the assistance of Korean artists and animation technicians, so I would classify it partly as a Korean anime. Though not Japanese, the Japanese influence is obvious.

Which brings us to the animation. It is very good. How’s that? More detail? The movements of the characters reflect their personalities. Dracula, when not fighting, is slow and methodical. Trevor moves as if he has not thought out his next step. Sypha has the grace, and the rest of the cast sneaks along, crashes forward, and so on as their personalities require.

The characterizations are very good, especially Dracula, voiced by Graham McTavish. Worldly, wise, and utterly exhausted, McTavish’s Dracula has lived too long and suffered much.

So what more do you want in a series? Season two is not as short as set-up season one, but is still only eight episodes. It will do until, or if, there is a season three.

Castlevania is available on Netflix Streaming.
