First of all, I find the name of this movie to be rather confusing. It is Blame!, with the exclamation mark. Who is to blame? Maybe the title makes more sense in Japanese? Whatever. It makes no difference.
In the dark and dismal distant future, mankind is in trouble. Once they controlled the mechanical Builders, Safeguards, and Exterminators, but now these things are acting independently and are the enemies of humans, hunting them down for extermination. In one village, part of a huge city, which is more like a crumbling, metallic fortress, only 150 people survive. Into this village comes the strange and silent Killy, searching for humans with the Net Terminal Gene. This is the key to re-controlling the Builders, Safeguards and Exterminators. Aiding Pops, Zulu and the other villagers, Killy finds the remains of Cibo, a robotic scientist with the way to victory.
It does make for an exciting story, with a few unexpected twists along the way. The animation of the action scenes are great, and makes up for a few scenes in which motionless crowds are used as background. (That bugs me. Make the people in the background move. Is it really that more expensive?)
The artwork is dark and almost colorless. It creates the proper depressing mood. This is certainly not a feel good story.
Blame! can currently be seen in the US on Netflix streaming. There is violence, and some of it bloody. No sex or nudity. No profanity. Judge for yourself what you want the kids to see. But this is an adult anime. So if you are not an adult you have no reason not to see Blame! You will be glad you did.
