    Default Random Vocabulary Question

786 Okay, so it's like this. I was rewatching Hanasaku Iroha and my mum noticed that they refer to the manager as "Kamisama." I found this unlikely, but I paid attention and sure enough, they call her "kami" in all variations. O kami, Kami-san, Kami-sama, kami, kami, kami.
I thought they might be saying "kanri," but my ears aren't hearing it. It is manifestly "kami."
Whiskey Tango Foxtrot? What sense does this make, and why? I know the general broader implications of the word, but when kamisama so obviously means Lord/Most Esteemed/August God, why on earth would they use it to refer to the manager? (If you haven't seen the anime, the manager is not in any way supernatural)
Any ideas? Or am I deaf and they are saying "kanri?"
    Thanks.

The thing you have to remember about Japanese is that there are many homophones. So many homophones. I don't know this show, so I'm not entirely sure of the context, but I'm guessing "kami" here is 上 (in the sense of "woman in charge of a restaurant"), not 神.
