Hi all (again),
I have attempted to transcribe and translate Yakusoku no Kizuna from Kyoukai no Kanata. To be honest this song was probably slightly out of my depth ahaha but I gave it a go.
There appears to be a lot of unwritten subjects in this song, so I gave it my best to select an appropriate one.
Also, because I wanted to keep the song consistent in how I format lines between each verse and chorus (i.e. number of lines in each verse/chorus are the same), it may appear bitty/fragmented. In order to make it clear where there's a new sentence, I've used capital letters at the start of the translation line (one bit with enjambment starts with an 'I' though so it may be a bit unclear).
I am also aware that there's more to the song after the end of what I've written, but this is just repeated verses and choruses from earlier so translation is exactly the same- I've just eliminated it from this post.
Yakusoku no Kizuna
Our Bonds of Promise
-----------------------------------------
tenohira ni tsukanda yakusoku wa
The promise I took hold of in my palm is
eien ni kienai takaramono
an eternally unfading treasure
itsuka miageta sora no kanata ni
Beyond the sky we looked up at one day
FUTURE STAR
bokura no asu e to michibiku FUTURE STAR
is the future star which leads us to our tomorrow
[Question about this line in particular. Is it 'bokura no (asu he to michibiku future star)' or is it '(bokura no asu) he to michibiku future star'? I mean is the star leading an omitted subject to 'bokura no asu' or is it leading 'bokura' to 'asu'? I tried to cover both bases in the translation at the moment]
kimi to tomo ni nagashita namida
The tears I shed with you,
marude yoru wo kakeru ryuusei de
it's almost as if they're shooting stars that soar through the night
[again question: what is the 'de' doing at the end of this line, or have I messed up the translation badly?]
EDIT: Is this actually what is granting the wishes in the next line?
negaigoto ga kanau no naraba
If my wishes can be granted,
hitotsu daijinamono wo mamoru yo
I will protect my one precious thing
kiseki wa guuzen ja nai
Miracles are not by chance,
doryoku no kesshou de
they're the fruits of our labour
[note: this is paraphrased because 'Miracles are not coincidental, they are a crystallisation of effort' sounds awkward- also again, why is 'de' at the end of this line]
donna kurayami ni mo
Whatever darkness we're in,
utsukushii yume wa aru yo
we have a beautiful dream
motto mae e susumou
Let's keep advancing even further forwards
akiramenai kokoro
[Our hearts will not give up]
[question: is this just a fragment by itself or is it part of another line?]
[EDIT: Is this actually the subject for the next line? Like "My heart that don't give up can do it's best if I'm with you"?]
kimi to naraba ganbareru
If with you, I can do my best
muda na koto wa nai yo
There's nothing pointless,
ue wo muite waraou
so let's look up and smile
ichidoukiri no toki dakara
Because this time only comes once
wasurenai yo egao
I won't forget your smile,
donna tsurai michi mo
even if the path's painful
itsumo kimi ga soba ni iru
You are always by my side
tadoritsuita saki ni
At our reached destination,
nani ga matteiyou to
whatever awaits us and
[question: 'matteiyou' is conjunctive form of 'matsu' + 'iyou' but I don't know what this 'iyou' is so I had to take a guess]
FUTURE STAR
asu wo terasu kizuna wa FUTURE STAR
the bonds that light tomorrow are a future star
kujikesou na hitori no yoru wa
During the night spent alone, about to be disheartened,
itsumo kimi no egao wo omou no
I always think of your smile
nazeka mune ga atsuku naru kara
Because for some reason my chest becomes hot,
sukoshi mae wo muite arukeru yo
I'll walk looking forward a bit more
nakama wa kakegaenonai
Our companions are irreplaceable
bokura no seishun
Our youth
nidoto moderenai kara
will never again return, so
taisetsuna uta ga atta
we had an important song
[Note: I don't get how this follows from the previous line but I think the 'kara' means that this line is a result of the previous]
zutto mae e susumou
Let's always keep advancing forwards,
hikari no hate made mo
until the light's end
kimi to naraba koerareru
If with you, it can be crossed
kowaku nanka nai yo
There's nothing scary,
dakara tsuyoku waraou
so let's strongly smile-
namida nuguu omajinai
It's a tear wiping good luck charm
mayowanaide iku yo
Let's go, unhesitating,
nagaku kewashii michi mo
even if it's a long and steep path
itsumo kimi ga soba ni iru
Always, you are by my side
donna kanashii kyou mo
whatever sad today,
donna kurushii kyou mo
and whatever painful today,
asu wa kitto kagayaku DESTINY
tomorrow is surely a shining destiny

Had a bit of a realisation with one of those paragraphs. Matching it up with a similar one later in the song, it implies that perhaps it should look like this:
奇跡は偶然じゃない
kiseki wa guuzen ja nai
Miracles are not by chance
doryoku no kesshou de
With the fruits of our labour,
donna kurayami ni mo
whatever darkness we're in,
utsukushii yume wa aru yo
we'll have a beautiful dream
so the 'de' is being used as indicating that the following is done using the 'doryoku no kesshou'. Is this better or worse than the previous one?
