Default Digimon Tamers - The Biggest Dreamer

    Link: http://www.animelyrics.com/anime/dig...estdreamer.htm

    Incorrect:
    Big and bigger, biggest dreamer!
    Shinjirarenakya
mabataki shiteru setsuna ni kieru yo
    Kokoro no hyouteki sorasazu hashire
    subete no asu wo tsuranuite

    Correct:
    Big and bigger, biggest dreamer!
    Shinjirarenai ga
mabataki shiteru setsuna ni kieru yo
    Kokoro no hyouteki sorasazu hashire
    subete no chikara butsukeyou

    Big and bigger, biggest dreamer!
    I wont believe
that I will fade into the vanishing moment
I wont turn away from my heart's target, Ill run
    and express all my power

    Reasons for corrections:
There is no verb conjugation 'rarenakya'. While this version of the romanization of this line is widespread, I cant find any evidence supporting that this romanization came from any official lyric sources. I believe it was a mistake, as 'nai ga' could easily be mistaken for 'nakya' when listening, and if one doesnt do research to make sure the verb is conjugated correctly, it can go unnoticed. The only reason I noticed was because while re-translating the last two lines, it didnt seem to fit well with the first two, so I checked those as well.

The last line seems to have been copied from a previous part of the song, you can tell when listening that it is completely different.

    Full:

    Wanna be the biggest dreamer
    Zensokuryoku de mirai mo
    ima mo kake nukero

    Wanna be the biggest dreamer
    Running full speed through
both the future and the present

Sore wa hitotsu no nazo nazo nazo
    "Boku wa dare nan darou?"

    That's right, I've realized it,
I forgot to do my homework
    That's one puzzle, puzzle, puzzle,
    "Who am I?"

    SURAIDINGU shite surimuketa

    Sugu tachiagaranakya
CHANSU wa nigete yuku wakatteru sa

    Even if I slide
    and skin my knees
I've gotta stand right back up,
I know my chance will run away

There is no verb conjugation 'rarenakya'.
Yes there is...? it's a contraction of -rarenakute ikenai in casual speech.

Scans of Digimon lyrics are difficult to find since the CDs are so old, but Kasi-time uses "信じられなきゃ" and I've never seen them be wrong before. Unless you have scans of the booklet that prove otherwise I don't see any reason to doubt them.

You are right that they missed "subete no chikara butsukeyou" though.

Yeah, the -なきゃ ending is pretty standard stuff and Kasi-time is a reliable, reputable source. I don't see any reason to change that line. I fixed the last line of that stanza, though.

Ah, well Im not at all an expert, so if there were multiple grammar rules, or slang, being used, that would have thrown me off... but I couldnt find anything for '-rarenakya' when I looked for it online. Like, nothing. 'Shinji-rarenai' was the closest I could find that was similar so I assumed there must have been an error in transcribing, since I couldn't find any original booklet scans to look at what characters were used...
(The english translation using 'nai ga' makes more sense though lol... idk)

I think the trouble you faced is that because it's a contraction, the 'nakya' isn't really considered a standard conjugation; like you won't find it in a conjugation list. It just comes after a (negative) base like that.

There's always the good old google the word to see if anyone else has used it method. It might not get you a definition, but it helps figure out if it's actually a mistake or not.
And if you still can't figure it out, it's always good to at least try separating more parts of the conjugation (in this case, the 'nakya' is coming after 'rare', which is as in 'shinjirareru', so there's actually three parts: 'shinji-rare-nakya') to see if anyone's written about them.

First off, 'nakya' actually appears on its own without 'rare' earlier in this very song, in verse 3:

    SURAIDINGU shite surimuketa
    hiza itakutatte ne
    Sugu tachiagaranakya
CHANSU wa nigete yuku wakatteru sa
Second, 'shinjirarenai ga' in that position would actually not translate to what you intended. As it is, 'ga' would be parsed as the conjunction "but", so it would actually mean something like "I can't believe it, but [...]". To get what you intended, it would need to be something like 'shinjirarenai no wa' (though that has its own set of issues).

Also, you might already be aware of this, but just in case, keep in mind that 'shinjirarenai' is distinct from 'shinjinai' - "can't", rather than "won't" (sometimes you can translate it either way, but it can cause problems in other cases).

    ---

To go into more detail on the contraction itself, the actual transformation is 'nakereba' → 'nakya'. 'nakereba ikenai' is often implied, being (probably) the most common use, but I find it more helpful to remember where the actual syllables come from, as this contraction can also go in the middle of a sentence anywhere 'nakereba' would.

    Examples:
-shiranakya ii koto - things we don't need to know
-jibun wo aisanakya hito mo aisenai - You gotta love yourself before you can love someone else

I mention this because I believe this is how the two lines in this song should be interpreted.

Romaji: Sugu tachiagaranakya CHANSU wa nigete yuku wakatteru sa
Current: I've gotta stand right back up, I know my chance will run away
Suggestion: I've gotta stand right back up or else my chance will run away, I know

Romaji: Shinjirarenakya mabataki shiteru setsuna ni kieru yo
Current: We've gotta believe, disappear into the twinkling instant
Suggestion: If we can't believe, we'll disappear into the twinkling moment

This could be the source of confusion.

(Aside: notice that I've joined a few pairs of lines together. This is because our most reliable source, kasi-time, doesn't have the lines split like that. While not absolute, this can be useful information for deciphering songs, since line divisions sometimes suggest sentence divisions.)

I agree, and I'll go ahead and make those changes. Is there anything else?

My two cents; this is why formal learning of Japanese isn't enough to do lyric translations. You wouldn't come across the '-nakya' form in the classroom because it is a contraction of '-nakereba (narimasen)' and thus colloquial.

But if OP admits of needing to study informal stuff more then that's great. We keep studying and finding new things all the time.

...so that you know where you can find me
