We understood that no matter what solution they take they're going to upset a lot of fanboys -- either the 'classic' fanboys who will rage that the combat system is different, or the 'new' fanboys that will rage that the combat system is outdated and clunky and -slow-.
My only solution was to incorporate both, I said, and the consensus was that it won't be possible, because it would require programming the game -twice- -- to integrate both types of fighting into the game, to balance the game both ways, etc, etc. Given the logistical headache of that, we can't tell which way they're going to go -- Square dislike the old turn-based system, but to stay faithful to the game as a remake and the hearts of the fans that want this remake they'd have to use it.
It's going to be interesting to see which direction they go. Personally, I've never played FF7 and never liked it, but I grew up watching friends play FF6, 7, and I've played most of 8 and 9, so the turn-based system is what I'm most comfortable with. My two cents is that they stick to the old combat system.
