    Default How to learn Japanese?

I want to learn Japanese, but I have a few issues keeping me from doing so at the moment.

The first problem I have is that I do not learn well in a completely immersive environment. All the colleges I looked at have classes where the professor never speaks a word of English. For whatever reason, I cannot absorb information this way. If I could, you'd think after 25 years or so of watching subtitled anime, I'd have gotten most of it.

The second thing is that I do not know anybody who actually speaks it. It would be nice to sit down with somebody who and learn.

Finally, I do not have the money for something like Rosetta Stone.

I am 46, and have had two strokes already, for those who do not know. My brain simply isn't wired to learn like most people.

Do any of you know any good traditional free learning sites, or other possibly avenues for me?

    Thanks.

Well, I looked at it. Seemed ok until they started shoving offers in my face. Proceeded to the free lessons.

Not what I'm looking for. But thanks anyway. What I need is a way to learn, as if I was a japanese grade schooler. Like ... practice sheets where you have to write the symbols over and over, sound them out phonetically, repeatedly, then form simple words. Just like 1-6 grade here in the US. But I can't simply do it on my own. I need an instructor to set pacing and such.

    That's how I learn best.

The problem is that you need something that costs alot but cannot pay for it.
If you want an instructor you have to dish out for classes or a private tutor. Private tutors would be the best for you because then you could explain exactly how you learn and it would be their job to pander to that.

    Hmmm.
I use Minna no nihongo, You can easily get the whole set for free if you know where to look.
it's an excellent book, kinda boring but it's the best thing for you to start, you can also search for Marugoto which is the Japan Foundation book to learn Japanese.
    if you need the books.

This has the everything, I honestly suffered to collect them, But share it everywhere so many people can use it. ^^
if it's not the one try
    https://www.dropbox.com/s/i49btfarm5...oads2.rar?dl=0
Both are learning materials which I collected and since the links were already half dead I just uploaded everything so I can't differentiate.
    Hope it helps you.
P.S:- For Kanji's use [Basic kanji book] it's so easy to find.

I second using a textbook to study solo or japanesepod101. Also recommended is searching for helpful Tofugu articles, they teach well and give great context to things!

I'm not sure about your area, but from where I am, you can do a language exchange with someone. You can sometimes find people on kijiji (not sure if that's in the states)...Basically you hangout once a week or something, help them learn English and they teach you Japanese. It can at least help supplement your learning for things such as phonetics and have those odd questions responded to right away.

If you are having a basic understanding of the hiragana and katakana alphabets then you can go for Yomuzoku, an online tool to learn Japanese online.
