Reputation and Reputation Power; What is it?

So I've been wondering for a long time; Whats reputation and how does it work?
I know that as it goes up you get a larger green bar depending on how positive it is, or red on how negative; but whats the difference between reputation and reputation power? do you gain any benefits from it?

Reputation power is how much reputation you give or take away from someone when you rate their post. That's basically all it does. It does mean that someone with a high enough rep power can destroy someone from full green into red in a single rep left.

You get a green bar largely depending on the reputation power of the person repping you. Every 100 rep power that someone has and uses on you will get you one green bar. You had one green bar when you created this thread. I repped your post and now you have three green bars. I have a rep power of 271, so two green bars were added. See what I mean?

There are also other factors but I think they vary from forums to forums.
