Can I watch Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya first?

I know little about the Haruhi Suzumiya series, but I see that the Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya is rated quite highly. I'm just wondering, storyline and continuity-wise, is it OK to watch this movie without seeing any of the other material in the Haruhi Suzumiya series?

I think its a bad idea to jump into a sequel movie without watching the series first. You'd be confused story and character wise and you won't get the same feel unless watching the prequels first.

I would also highly advise against watching the movie without both TV series. The TV series introduces you to the characters, their connections, which the movie uses very heavily. General plot points are also very important to the movie at times as well.

I actually did that. I didn't understand what kyon was referring to and I was lost on the stories origin. After finishing the movie I immediately went to the anime and things started to catch on. But nah, you should watch the show & experience the endless 8
