I'm noticing more Americans at work paying attention to the world cup this year. It's getting more news coverage, and all the protests and that anti-FIFA comedy bit by John Oliver are helping the popularity too I think.

It's also fun picking on the Brits and Spaniards around :P

It's weird to think about Americans starting to care about the sport. Though we'll see how long that lasts after the world cup.

We might have to figure out the name thing.

Maybe instead of soccer we could just homogonize with our South American immegrant population and agree to call Soccer "fútbol". If we also pronounce it differently we might be able to avoid most confusion.

Although I'm given to understand that the Australians have taken to shortening "Gridiron Football" to just "Gridiron" to refer to Football. I kinda like that actually.

We might have to workshop it. Hmmm

Germany made that rough on the hosting team. That disparity between scores reminds me of the trouncing Portugal put on North Korea in the 2010 World Cup in South Africa (7-nil).

I'm watching a re-run of the Brazil vs Germany semi final since I didn't get to watch the match live.

In all honesty, I'm not much into football; but this match was obviously significant and entertaining from start to finish. I think Germany has scored like 5 goals in under 30 minutes already; Brazil looks so disorientated and overwhelmed right now. Without a doubt, this has got to be German efficiency at its best!

And you know what? As much as I like Brazil as a team, I'm very glad they got outplayed and humiliated. And, not to sound too political: but I just hope the Brazilian government might think twice before pouring ludicrous amounts of money into international events (the profits of which mostly go to Fifa anyway) at the expense of well-being for most Brazilians. I get that football is Brazil's national identity; but no game can ever justify what is effectively violations of human rights.

I get what you're saying.

I mean World Cups are assigned by lottery. Obviously is a privilege they didn't want to let go

But I understand what you're saying. The Government spent 14 Billion into the world cup...a lot more than warranted and they could've SPENT A LOT A LOT LESS.

At least World Cup 2018 will be in Russia but World Cup 2022 is gonna be a case because the country that qualified is a worse condition than Brazil.
