I wish I did, I regret it but I got my followers on Tumblr to tell me things that had happened though.

the oscars can take a flying fk at the moon, i don't care about a million dollar party for celebrities to pad their egos. they don't do us a favor by making movies, we do them a favor by watching them.

Well, Ellen was pretty good. I liked Pink's performance for The Wizard of Oz number. Idina Menzel was great too. I also like that '12 Years a Slave' won Best Picture and Best Screenplay.

For 'The Wolf of Wall Street.'

Jared Leto and Matthew McConaughey won big for 'Dallas Buyers Club' and both actors gave powerful speeches. That was pretty good.

    Shockingly I did.

    I blame love and marriage.

I thought the song from frozen was really weak. Anybody here particularly like it?

Oh and did anybody catch the anime series that got nominated?

I don't think Leo deserved an oscar for that particular performance.... It's more of "Leo hasn't gotten an oscar for any roles he did amazing in; so now we're going to be upset when he doesn't get an oscar even if the role wasn't oscar worthy"

I think one day he'll get there, but honestly I think the academy's biggest issue is just this; he plays the same type of character throughout all of his movies... From titanic, The Great Gadsby, The Wolf of Wall Street... He always just plays a suit and tie guy.. I think he needs to stick with more compelling characters to win an oscar. Something like his acting in Diango, however he wasn't the lead in that movie so of course it'd have no grounds for best actor.

I'm so happy Frozen won best animated feature of the year! The anime films nominated IMO were biased choices as Madoka Magica 3 seems to have gotten much superior reviews and overall considered a masterpiece. I can see why it wasn't nominated, but the other ones barely deserved the spots.

Uh? Am I missing something because there wasn't any 'anime' nominations.... There was Miyazaki's "The Wind Rises"... But I'd hardly call that an anime nomination as Miyazaki is highly integrated within the western culture. There's not a snowflake chance in hades that they'd nominate something like Madoka or any other otaku-culture based anime.

I think everyone is confusing the animated shorts as the nominated anime? To which, it's not.

Oscars: Japan Celebrates Double Anime Nominations

With Miyazaki's "The Wind Rises" and Shuhei Morita's "Possessions" both up for Academy Awards, Japan will be hoping for a repeat of its 2009 double triumph.

TOKYO – Japan awoke Friday morning to the news that it had secured two Oscar nominations for anime films, Hayao Miyazaki's The Wind Rises for animated feature film and Shuhei Morita's Possessions (Tsukumo) in the animated short film category.

“I think it is a huge honor for my retirement work, The Wind Rises, to be nominated in the Oscars' best animated feature film category. To be so valued overseas is a great honor for the entire staff involved in this work,” wrote Miyazaki in a statement.

The Wind Rises, which Miyazaki has said was his last feature, became the highest grossing film in Japan in 2013 by taking $116.1 million (11.6 billion yen). It could earn the anime master another Oscar. Spirited Away (Sen to Chihiro no Kamikakushi) won the best animated feature Oscar in 2002, and remains the biggest Japanese box office hit of all time with 30.4 billion yen -- $304 million at today’s exchange rates.

Morita's Possessions, in which a ragged-looking samurai takes shelter in a shrine inhabited by mischievous spirits, is reminiscent of some of the fantastical scenes in Miyazaki's Spirited Away.
“Awards for short films are rare in Japan, so I’m particularly pleased to get nominated for the Academy Awards,” Morita told reporters in Japan.
The last time Japan was nominated for two Oscars was in 2009, when Yojiro Takita's Departures (Okuribito) took the foreign language film award, while Kunio Kato's La Maison en Petits Cubes (Tsumiki no ie) won for best animated short film.

I'm not even sure what you're trying to say there. Or rather I think I might, but I hope I'm getting it wrong. Care to elaborate?

It means that most of Miyazaki's movies are released as Disney movies in the U.S. and get vast theatrical releases as well. While it is an anime in terms of being an animation from Japan, it's not something I'd compare an otaku culture with... For instance something like Madoka or any other popular culture anime film will never get a nomination for the Oscars.

Like I said, I understand why Madoka Magica wasn't nominated.

I'm sorta confused in why you think if an anime gets vast word of mouth in America (such as numerous theatrical releases just to throw in an example) it shouldn't be lumped in as apart of "otaku culture". Just need a good explanation to add on from you said.

The Wind Rises is an anime nominated for the Oscars, no matter how integrated it has become with the western culture.

Because most people who watch it are not anime fans within the U.S. It's kind of like Pokemon and Sailor Moon when you were a kid.. You had no idea it was an anime or even what anime was, it was just a household staple. Miyazaki's films are just like that... To them it's just another cute movie that Disney releases

While your argument makes more sense now and you did present good examples, I still firmly believe The Wind Rises it still apart of the "otaku culture" to a point because my guess is more anime fans have seen it than non anime fans.

    @Rainbow Crash

I'm with Yoko. You could point to other works using your reasoning. For instance DBZ. It's even more popular in the states then a Miyazaki film. While not in theaters it has been aired on TV as a cartoon on Cartoon Network and other places. Granting similarities to the films being treated as Disney movies.
