Anime is popular, but it's not quite mainstream popular anymore - you have that crap Naruto and the latest season of Pokemon (and maybe One Piece), but you don't have the same degree of popularity as InuYasha, the first few seasons of Pokemon, Cowboy Bebop, the 2003 revival of Astro Boy, the Digimon series or even Perfect Blue. Back when Ghost In The Shell came out, Conan O'Brian visited a dubbing booth to dub gag dialogue over an out-of-context scene from the film - you will never see that happen again on a fairly popular show, ever again, because anime has been established in the public mind as kiddy bullcrap due to Pokemon's explosion everywhere, and the slew of shows brought over in that craze that were either made for children or dubbed and edited in a way so that they were.
