There are plenty of adult themed anime. Its called hentai.

^Type of anime meant for adults.
I'm guessing you're looking for serious stuff? If so, don't listen to Yoko. Look through this list by copying this URL: http://myanimelist.net/anime.php?genre[0]=42&q=&tag=&sm=0&sd=0&em=0&ed=0&c[0]=a&c[1]=b&c[2]=c&o=3&w=1
This is more adult oriented but still not everything you're looking for. Make sure to pick out the serious shows by reading the synopsis first.

hmmmmm
the first two that come to my mind would be Baccano! and Spice and Wolf.
They both have good plots. The artwork is excellent, and both of them require a certain level of maturity to really enjoy. If you want more of a dark/creepy mood, go with Baccano!. If you want a well-done, happy, and suspenseful romance, go with spice and wolf.
Now that i think about it, if you want romance, comedy, a unique story geared more toward an adult audience, you may wanna give "Yamada's First time" a try. I'ma tell you an overview of the story, but understand that it is NOT hentai. but story makes it kinda sound like it is. Its an ecchi romantic comedy about a girl whose goal is to sleep with 100 guys...but she's first gotta get past her first time, and that seems to be a pretty big problem for her because she's very insecure about being a virgin.
Just trust me, its funny as hell, loaded with great jokes and situations and with great plot twists.

I might have to check them out, as I too am looking for some more adult oriented anime. When I think adult, I think more serious, while some may think echii to me that makes it more immature and further from what I want. Now sure I like that from time to time, but I think they throw it in too often to cover up for lack of good plot and other stuff.
Out of my list of animes (which is pretty short), probably the more mature ones would probably be Ghost in the Shell and Claymore. I really liked Elfin Lied too, but it also suffered from a lot of immature stuff too lol.

"adult oriented anime" is a ridiculously broad-spectrum request. "adult" could mean anything from "contains graphic nudity" to "is excessivly gory" to "contains complicated plot elements". could you be... a lot more specific in your request?
i suppose if i had to at this moment, i'd recommend Kara no Kyoukai which contains all three.
aneything with a lot of blood, vilance and gore gelore
live life to the fullest because you are not guarantied a tomorrow
these anime are abit violent but awesome Claymore, shingeki no kyojin (attack on titan).
and then there are these manga that i read which are more about love and growing up such as horimiya, nisekoi and this one kimi no iru machi which i love some much its about a group of friends who fall in and out of love with lots of complications but the best bit about it is watching how they grow up its starts from high school until they are in college. the manga is still going so who knows how far it will go but i highly recommend this manga
When they Cry.
Or just go on Google look up "blood" and "anime" int eh image search and see what pops up.
Anime is a lot like sex. Done right it's a beautiful act of creation that brings a little more light into the world. If it's sick and wrong... it's even better.

just started high school DxD and why isnt it on the list?

I would definitely have to agree with a lot of people saying Claymore. I loved the story and it wasn't a happy-go-lucky Anime or just a slay fest for the "good" guys. Not to spoil anything but they don't fair any better than the demons they fight from time to time. Also, the Ghost in the Shell series has quite a bit of violence and action but can be dull on a few episodes as the explore moral and political issues in the cyber future portrayed... I'll look through my collections but those are the ones that I've watched through multiple times and still enjoy.
Try some of the old webcomic
They can be pretty entertaining. And more adult oriented than American delivered edited anime.
