Default Maria-sama ga Miteru translation question

I'm a beginner at Japanese, but I know enough to be confused by the Japanese title of Maria Watches Over Us. The title is Maria-sama ga Miteru, which is supposed to mean something like The Virgin Mary is watching, but I'm confused about the tense of the verb. I think the verb is miru, but then shouldn't it be conjugated as mite iru, to give a progressive sense? Is miteru a contraction?

Thanks for letting me know. Are contractions like this commonly used?

Yes, Japanese has contractions for quite a few grammar terms (mostly changing from formal to informal), some of them have even evolved to more common usage (e.g. the light stress sentence end 'n da(desu)' is from 'no desu'.)

Present Continuous: -te iku = -teku
Imperative 1: -nakute wa naranai = -nakucha
Imperative 2: -nakereba naranai = (-nakerya) = -nakya
    Opposed Conjunction: keredomo = kedo
Present Undesired: -te shimau = -chau/jau
Quote: to iu = tte iu = tte
    ...etc.

Yup, it is a contraction. Sometimes, in spoken Japanese, it is easier to contract the pronunciation. mi-te-i-ru is 4 syllables and this can be further shortened to 3.
