I thought "Hai" meant "Yes, Sir" or "Yes, Madam." Can it mean just "yes" as well?

'Hai' is polite for 'Yes' and depending on the situation, like talking to a superior at work, it could mean 'Yes, Sir' or 'Yes, Ma'am'.

'Un' is more casual and used between friends for 'Yes', 'Uun' is casual for 'No'... so be careful with it.

True, but when people are first learning, saying 'hai' means 'yes' is more understandable than saying it means 'I agree'.

Either way, best to keep both in mind, right?

@ValiLucifer With @Togame 'sukimasen' I think it was supposed to be 'sumimasen' just a typo, but 'suimasen' is also used as 'excuse me'

    If I can remember

O-nii(suffix) O-nee(suffix) is used when you are talking to your own siblings, and I think mostly young kids and girls(when they are older) use this way.
The 'O' is an honorific and optional when talking to your own siblings, same with a suffix. Mostly you call them by their names.
    I.e.
    Kids&Girls: Oniichan, Oniisan, Oneechan, Oniisan.
Girls: [name]nii (I'm guessing a cute way to call your older brother)
Boys: Aniki (Older Brother), Aneki (Older Sister) - when talking to them. The 'ki' is optional, I'm guessing.

The kanji just by itself though is 'Ane' and Ani', but with hiragana, it changes to 'Nee' and 'Nii', respectively.
Just like Father and Mother is Chichi and Haha, but with hiragana it changes to 'Otousan' and 'Okaasan'.

    Hope this helped. ( ・ω・ )

Answer: Hai, banana ga arimasen. (I agree, there are not bananas./Yes, we have no bananas!)

The advice to gaijin is to avoid negative form of verbs in questions, to avoid confusion.
Think about it, there are very little gaps between 'I agree' and 'yes'. They are loosely the same.
Though what you said is more accurate, 'hai' as 'yes' is in almost every form of Japanese textbooks for learning.

    @Amber184
So even with the difference in characters, they all pretty much mean the same.
But is it all right if I refer to someone else's bro or sis as their Onee-san or Onii-san while I'm talking to that someone.. not the older siblings.
I figure it may be inaccurate or something, but I'm sure they would understand what I'm saying.

Technically 'yes' means 'That is true' (I agree) whereas 'no' means 'That is false' (I disagree), however there is a strange inconsistency in the case of negative questions where you can say 'no' with the meaning of 'That is true'

Q: Didn't you go to school?

    A: Yes <-- ambiguous
A: No <-- implies 'That is true'
A: No, I went <-- implies 'That is false'

This is the main case where the distinction matters.

Oneesan is an honorable form, and Ane is a humble form. This is really a question about when to use humble forms and when to use honorable forms. The simple answer is that you, your possessions, and the people in your group get humble forms, while the listener, their possessions, and the people are in their group get honorable forms.

So basically you apply this principle to any situation to figure it out.

Case 1: Talking to your sister
Since she is the listener, she gets honorable form, thus use Oneesan

Case 2: Talking about someone else's sister
If that someone else is the listener or their group, then use Oneesan
If that someone else is in your group, then you'd use Ane

Case 3: Talking about your own sister
In most cases she is in your group, and you'd use Ane, though I suppose it is possible she could be there and you'd use Oneesan.

This is the general principle to follow. The hard part is getting a sense of who is in your group and who is in the listener group. Also, Japanese will sometimes break these principle themselves, because it's confusing even for them.

Everything you said, I already know. I took Japanese for 2 years.
But you also answered my question... I can use the honorable form in any case. I'd be super formal, but I would still make sense.
