I disagree, there's always something to hide. People are naturally judgmental. The opportunities you have in life will likely be granted and/or decided by your peers. Your personal preferences, religious affiliation, political affiliation, opinions, sexual orientation, personal life, etc ... can all play a role in such critical matters.
The most common example are job opportunities. For example, if you just so happen to publicly disclose your political affiliation, and your hiring manager opposes your political ideology, you may be turned down (obviously for other reasons).
That's why you should always protect your privacy. Your peers are judging you whether you like it or not.
