I did so, not because there is a software problem that they might need view my harddrive's data for, but rather because if in the course of doing their "normal procedures" they feel the need to backup the harddrive. Now it's just mechanical problem (broken hinge) but they might still backup the harddrive for some reason. And the LAST THING THAT I WANT ON SOME STRANGER'S COMPUTER IS LOLI HENTAI IMAGE DATA! Especially with it being in a legal "gray area" in the US. And a service tech who saw that might think they need to call 911 on me for it, and get the police involved. And I've heard of stories where people have been busted for REAL CP by computer service techs (never for loli hentai on a computer, but one guy got busted many years ago for having loli hentai manga in his manga shop). But there's a first time for everything, and I don't want to be the first person locked up for 25 years on CP charges due to some dumb computer tech finding lolicon hentai on my comp, thinking he should call the cops, and then having a jury agree with him in court. So I did what I would have done if I had real CP on my comp. That is to say I did a full random-data write to ALL of the unused bytes on my harddrive (if the file's been deleted it removes the reference to it in the file table, and marks it as available for writing, so it becomes free-bytes and these can be written over with random bytes to cover what was originally there). That's one step short of random-byte-writing over the ENTIRE DRIVE (basically combining random byte writing and a format in one procedure), but I held off on this more drastic step as it would require the pain of reinstalling EVERYTHING, plus the techs at the service place might wonder why my computer barely had anything on it since I had the comp for a while, and become suspicious and report me. So I took the best course of action for hiding what needed hiding from the computer techs.
However something like that is far from perfect (burning the HDD would be a more sure erasure of the data). Just telling you, so if you stop hearing me for a while you'll know why. I don't think anything will happen because I took the precautions that anyone with something to hide and in my situation and with my knowledge of available secure erasure software would have done. But since it isn't foolproof, I could still possibly be found out. Just want to let you know, so that if one day I stop posting here, you'll know what most likely happened to me, that is to say I got busted on CP charges due to comp techs finding loli hentai in my internet cache that somehow wasn't properly erased despite my best efforts to do so, and the justice system stretching the law to get me punished despite it not being real CP.
