Default Why do people enjoy watching SAW films?

This particular question popped up during break today, and I would like to hear the opinion of the AF members.

I myself find the SAW films horribly morbid and sickening. The plot is well written, and it's amazing how the NEXT movie helps understand the previous one's plot, but the enormous amount of blood, guts and chopped off/in half limbs deem me not to watch these films (anymore).

We have the same idea. I actually only saw SAW VI. It was too..much. I can't bare to watch it for like 15 minutes.

I just don't stand blood-shedding films. And I can't get some people who finds the film entertaining.
I mean, you enjoy other peoples have their limbs chopped seriously? :l

I dont like torture films either, in fact I hate torture, its probably my biggest fear. But Saw 1 and 2 actually have a really good plot imo and the character Jigsaw is well developed. Jigsaws philosophy of "people who dont appreciate life dont deserve it" is really fascinating to me. I dont push it on others but I would like to use it more on myself, be harder on myself that way.

Jigsaw puts his victims through immense pain, but he still gives them the chance to escape and survive and better their life, if their will to live exceeds their fear of extreme pain. I dont approve of his methods ofc but his motive isnt plain sadism, it has a purpose, and that purpose makes it and him very fascinating.

Saw 3,4 I was okay I guess I dont remember that much of their story but the torture stuff just got too much so I stopped. Especially Saw 3, that was just horrifying o_O

To be honest i was intrigued by the character's choices, it was like watching an episode of xfactor or some sort of reality show. I also used to be pretty into guts and gore x3 i have no idea why, just found it invigorating. As i've grown older i have sort of lost touch with my love for blood n' guts and in turn haven't seen any recent SAW movies after SAW III

^I've heard of it and looked it up like a year ago. Ugh those movies are just torture and gore and rape and stuff just for the heck of it ;o But hey some people do like that in movies ^^ To each his own.

Very well said! I was very intrigued by his philosophy as well and i think it's somehow shaped me today (as i watched the SAW movies at a young and early age) because i do tend to look at people who don't live their full potential in life as shrug-offs. Like i just wipe the thought of them off my shoulder and continue to do my best. I don't tend to associate myself with low lives either, it's really just not my crowd. And i mean degenerates like failing students, potheads, kids who take advantage of their parents to a disgusting extent etc. etc. and i'm even sometimes deeply angered by it and i'll carry a scowl with me at school because good lord about 85% of my schools population of kids are degenerate dope smoking wiz khalifa worshipping dead-beat hipsters.
I'll give you an example that would probably carry on generally with most kids at my school:
This one kid Benjamin Herr choked his mother for breaking his BONG. >:c
I...i..i could not believe how normal the kids at my school took that story. As if it's not a big deal. Also the type of kids that attend my school: One named Eric tilmont was calling my friend a faggot and a nub and my friend said he wasn't scared of him. Now Eric is an 18 year old senior and my friend is a freshman. Eric proceeds by walking up, chest puffed out saying "I could kick your (arse) right here, i'm not afraid of going to jail!" and before he even takes a step closer to my friend i extend my arm, flat palmed to his chest and say "you will do nothing. You are an immature brat, now go your separate ways". He responds "Whatever faggots, don't wanna go to jail anyway!". SO you didn't care before but suddenly you don't want to? Okay. -_-; and you can stand up to my freshman friend, but when a slightly bigger and taller junior (myself, and not taller or bigger by much i might add) stands up to you, you scurry off tail between your legs?
If you ask me, these kids Ben and Eric should've been in a friggin' SAW movie. (sorry i typed a bunch ;w; i am so ranty)

@PhantomPhD Oh my god thats alot of anger and hate you have ;/ I wouldnt wish even the worst human being on this earth to end up as Jigsaws victim. I agree with the philosophy but Jigsaws methods is imo waaay too harsh.

Oh god... I dont know what to say really.. I can understand your anger and your hate, I have felt it too. But at the same time its a little scary cause this is what keeps the cycle going, its sad really... I dont think hate and anger will solve anything, they are destructive both to oneself and to others.

I enjoy the movies, personally. I'm not a gore junkie but when you take the very well written plot and you fuse it with the choices the people must make in order to live, it becomes very watchable. I actually own all six movies. Sure, the gore is over the top, but it adds that much more to the films. Not everything can be sunshine and ponies. ;D

    Ummm... why not!?

Like @PhantomPhD , I also used to love horror and gore but now I can't bear to watch it. I think as I've gotten older and learnt to understand death, and also what it's like to have ppl in your life you truly love, it gets much harder to be entertained by people dying in horribly violent ways...

I don't really like anything of the 'gore' genre. Just looking at the DVD case is enough to make me shy away.

You seem awfully stressed. Don't think I don't understand-hard time at school, combined with boredom and buzzing teenage hormones can jam your mind quite nicely. But it all passes away once you are faced with some real problems and challenges. A painful experience would be a nice medicine for all your unnecessary worries.

However, as you are now your survival is unlikely. A person who can't get over the fact that others have different value systems and lead different lifestyles in daily life is most likely to break in a more stressful situation

I can't even stand watching Friday the 13th, so count me out on watching other gore blood thriller stuff and torture. It makes me feel hurt all over. :s

Thanks to Ms Lucy for this awesome, funny gif.

The person that you are now is not the person that I used to know. You're becoming a stranger that I've never met before. Not liking the change though.

I havent seen all of them, and I think they are pretty decent in their own twisted way, but I don't care for the gore aspect of it. I like a bit of horror, I guess something like The Ring, but not the blood and guts that really grosses, and freaks me out. What I guess is odd according to my friends though, is that being a hunter and gutting many a animal, I should be used to this. I mean I have reached in with a knife and pulled out the entrails of dozens of deer, and these are relatively similar to humans, 100 to 200+ lbs. That doesnt bother me. But seeing human guts (even if its not real) well that turns my stomach.

I haven't watched the Saw movies (I've been meaning to), but I do enjoy films in the horror/gore genre.

People who like this sort of thing enjoy having their boundaries stretched, plain and simple.

What is "right"? What is "wrong"? What does it mean to be human? What does it mean to be alive?

Some people climb mountains, others bungee jump, some do drugs, some speed on the highway--it's all the same, it's adrenaline, it's risky, it's dangerous. Other people would never go to these sorts of lengths because of the physical harm implied in some of these activities. But, horror-seeking people are no different, just more cautious almost. It's an experiment in the taboo. We just like being pushed to their limits of what our moralities, our emotions, our thoughts, and everything that we hold dear will allow. All so that we can return to ourselves and be like, "wow, I just survived all of that". To feel our hearts racing in our chest, drumming in our ears, our knuckles white from making fists.

It doesn't matter if something is cruel or violent or gory or whatever else offends you. What matters is the journey; how do people react in life or death situations? What actually /is/ evil? Why is that way? When does it become too much?

And as to gore, well, I've already had to dissect a human body for school...so a lot of the gore is rather unrealistic. It's there just to push your buttons, to make your own blood flow fast in your veins.

As far as I'm concerned, on the movie screen, everything is exploratory. Nothing is real. Food for thought is always welcome.

That's the whole point of the "torture porn" genre. Some people simply enjoy it out of a sense of morbid curiosity. The sheer excessiveness of the violence can be entertaining just because it's so ridiculous. I don't get it either but clearly there's a market out there for these films or else we wouldn't get a new batch every year (kinda like the whole found footage thing).

I believe we watch films like that do to the creativity involved that was applied within the movie. Seeing a horrific act is both captivating and very taboo in general since its not openly talked about to often at least not around me of course.

(The amount of thought that goes into these traps and horrific acts of violence are well thought out - and yet very creative as well)

I think it's the whole idea and plot behind the series. I watch it just to see the new ways they die.
