Looking for mid or late 80's anime or manga title.

In 1989 when I was in 6th grade, I sat next to a Japanese kid who was constantly drawing cute anime/manga figures and animals. He even taught me how to draw them. I believe there were humans, animals and even mushrooms. I have no idea if this was from a manga or an anime series or from both. I also don't know if these characters where from any U.S. versions or if they were strictly in Japan. I believe he had only been in the U.S. a short time. All I do know is that the characters and any associated storyline existed at least in 1989 and possibly earlier. I researched Dragonball since it existed at that time, but I'm not sure if this was what I'm talking about. I remember the characters being more cartoonish and Nintendo looking than the ones in Dragonball but I guess I could be wrong. Does anyone have any suggestions about what cartoon characters I could be referencing? Thanks for any help!

No he definitely didn't make them up. I can't remember what he had exactly, but he had a reference of some sort. Maybe it was a manga? It seems as if he had other gear related to it as well like a pencil holder, etc. I remember the spikey hair which made me think it could be Dragonball, but when I looked up Dragonball characters, none of them looked familiar. In the late 80's, there couldn't have been TOO many Japanese manga/cartoon stories that it could be from no?

I forgot to mention that another feature was the large oval eyes close together, like in Dragonball, yet another feature that drew me to Dragonball, but I still don't think it was that. I remember creatures and landscapes, it almost seemed video game like, maybe it was or it could have been a regular cartoon and not necessarily a manga or anime.
