My friends all rave about Katawa Shoujo, about a guy living with six girls with various disabilities as a result of his own cardiac dysrhythmia. (Note that although it's not primarily sexual in nature, it has some adult scenes.) Free to download online.
There's also Hatoful Boyfriend. You play as the only human female in an institute otherwise populated by pigeons. There are dating sim elements, but I've heard the plot gets surprisingly dark later on, and for a game with such an absurd premise, I've heard it's actually very emotionally compelling. Guess that depends on your point of view. The official English translation patch costs roughly $5.34 online.
Finally, there are Christine Love's games:
- Digital: A Love Story
- Don't take it personally babe, it just ain't your story
- Analogue: A Hate Story
I haven't played any of them yet (even though I have them all), but supposedly they touch on a lot of heady concepts and are very well-written. Digital: A Love Story and Don't take it personally, babe... are free to download online, but Analogue: A Hate Story costs $10 online.
Again, I haven't played any of these games, but when I think of visual novels and when I ask people about visual novels, these are the most common responses.

Not sure of the names but the android market has quite a few if u have an android that is, sorry couldn't help much.
I've only played visual novels adapted in anime like clannad or fate/stay night. They are good but I assume that you've already played to them. I was looking for one too and Katawa shoujo seems good.
One of the best free VNs out there is Narcissu, though it's probably a decade old by now, but it's by Tomo Kataoka from Nekonekosoft.
If you are the kind that emphasises on authorship, go find works done by Romeo Tanaka.
If you do not mind sex scenes (they are not an integral part of the plot) there are translations of epic eroge out there, for instance G-Senjou no Maou/The Devil on G-String. Don't start on the commercial ones (MangaGamer, JAST USA, Peach Princess) just yet.

...so that you know where you can find me
I forgot about a big one - 999 (9 Hours, 9 Persons, 9 Doors) for the Nintendo DS.
Again, I haven't played it (even though I have it), but it's a visual novel with some adventure game elements (puzzles, in addition to the focus on character interactions and branching paths). Story-wise, it seems like a cross between Harlan Ellison's I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream and the Saw movies: nine people are abducted by a mysterious entity named Zero, who forces them to progress through a series of numbered doors and solve his puzzles to stay alive. It's certainly not a romance.
There's a sequel coming out later this year called Zero Escape: Virtue's Last Reward.

Analgue: A Hate Story was pretty cool experience and definitely very different from a traditional visual novel.
G線上の魔王 (Devil on a G-String) is one with a good story and good music. Warning tho, the visual novel has a few nasty sex scene that doesn't have a skip option for, but I'd strongly recommend it for the awesome story and music!
And Katawa Shoujo is a really nice one too. I haven't gotten to do all the story arks yet but I liked Emi's. I really like the character in this one. It's also funny and with some great soundtracks.
Hmm, Played Katawa Shoujo and loved it it's on my other computer. And The Visual novels i usually play are made from animes.. So.. But thanks I'll check all of these out. ._.
Any vn from key is always good like clannad kanon and there are also little busters that are great
Yeah I buy most of my visual novels so here you get some of the ones I own, I picked the one with no or very few sex scenes in them if you prefer it without.
