    Default Video editing program suggestions/reviews/thoughts

So I am thumbing between the Idea of getting either Final cut Pro, Adobe Premier Pro, Adobe After Affects, or Adobe Premier Elements. Can somebody give me some insight on any of those programs from personal experience? I do plan to use these for some AMV editing and also other types of editing so I also would like know which programs allow you to use videos downloaded from Itunes. I would also like to know if there are any good Video editing programs available for the IPad that would allow me to use uploaded video clips.

I dunno about the other two, but I used Premiere Pro and After Effects a lot some years ago. Premiere is better for cutting clips, making simple transitions....think of Windows Movie Maker x 10. some special effects, but they wont be very good..or rather amazing. After effects is mainly for special effects. In contrast, it can pull out some fantastic ones if you know what you're doing (like pro cinema-quality stuff), but as for cutting and rearranging clips, it's not really meant for such (unless they've upgraded a lot since CS3). Premiere and AE are sorta meant to be used with each other, rather than stand-alone programs. I've heard good things about Vegas though, so you might want to look into that.

Vegas is more user-friendly and it takes a lot less space than Premiere so yeah, I suggest that.

I would get Vegas but the only problem is that I do all my editing on a Mac although I guess I could get parallels or something.

And here I thought Macs were supposed to be better for video editing O_______________o

But yeah ... I've been told to get Vegas too, so if there's a Mac port of it then get that. Also I'm sure there are programs out there that can convert video formats (I'm assuming that iTunes video format is just bogstandard MP4 video? My Hauppauge PVR software has a tool to convert that, also a free program called FormatFactory can probably convert it to pretty much anything you want (I just use that for ripping MP3s from videos, though.)

Adobe software is overpriced anyway. e_e

I've used both adobe premiere and Vegas.

Adobe premiere sort of felt like editing in a assembly fine factory. It wasn't very flexible and was just a program I got without looking into different programs much. I eventually found Sony Vegas and it was the holy grail of video editing, very easy to navigate, flexible, and I was very pleased with premeire. Unfortunately whoever packaged premiere needed to be fired since it came in a square box, with the CD in one of those flimsy paper envelopes with a film cover on the front so you can see what it is. The activation code was on a separate piece of paper and the guide was on another booklet. Needless to say at some point I lost the code and had to have my computer reformatted a few times since so I couldn't reinstall.. and later I lost the disk since well there was no disk case to put it in. >;[ I really hope they fixed this packaging issue by now.

Lol, if you have a Mac then your best bet is Final Cut Pro X.

It should be the best one for Mac.

If you're a Windows then the best bet is Sony Vegas 11 (or 12 when it comes out) because like I said, it takes a lot less space. however it's a lot pricier but it's what mostly every Windows user uses to edit videos, render videos and all that other stuff.

Sony Vegas Pro 11 takes around 506MB of space but it's 500 dollars while Adobe Premier is 150 dollars and it takes over 1GB of your HDD, so it's heavier.

I dunno about Final Cut Pro X but I know that's the best for Mac and is around 300 dollars.

You can always do trials and see for yourself which ones are more user friendly to you.

I personally have both and I use Sony Vegas Pro 11 for most of my video rendering (which you SHOULD do if you're going to upload to Youtube). Adobe Premier is a little more friendlier to use when it comes to adding watermarks or any kind of layers and all (although in Sony Vegas it's pretty easy but it takes more steps). You just gotta uncheck to maintain the aspect ratio. REGARDLESS, it's still a lot easier to use for simple editing.

EDIT: Your computer specs are VERY VERY important too, Adobe Premiere demands more specs while Vegas doesn't. Also make sure you have a decent computer because the better the processor the faster it will render you videos as well.

For example, a 40 min video (max settings on my Hauppauge PVR = 13.5 MBPS, 720p or (1080P depending on the game)) takes me around 4 hrs for me to render in Sony Vegas. If it's 1080p then I say 5hrs. or something...and of course, in .MP4 format. In Sony Vegas, that is.

FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, never render on AVI, especially if you're doing HD because 2 minutes = 10 GB.

The Rendering or rather exporting options in Adobe Premiere and pretty limited and changing he project options as well, such as frame rate, format, resolution and such. Not to mention if offers an iPod and iPad template for easier editing if you are making a video to use your iPod or iPad.

Yes, you were...it's different. They look the same but they work differently and it offers different features.

It's like calling Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator the same because it's Adobe.

Hm... I think I've tried all the video editing programs out there, so here are my suggestions:

AVS Video Editing - It's a free program, you can download it from the original site and i believe it's a pretty good choice for a FREE program. It doesn't use lots of space, it can detect the scenes from a movie, it has many good transitions, you can edit the video's colour, speed, focus... The only inconvenience is that it kind of kills your CPU, you need a powerful processor (i3,i5 or i7) if you want the program to run at its full speed.

Pinnacle Studio Ultimate v15 - It's about $60 on Amazon, i believe. It's an easy-to-use program, designed for low quality CPUs. It also detects the scenes from a video, it has transitions, but this is kind of all. It depends on what you want to do with it.

Magix movie edit pro - The last versions are kind of expensive, so i suggest you the ones that are around $60-$90. I use the v16 and i can do my job with it. It doesn't detect the scenes ( i really do like this feature, i'm a lazy bastard, lol ), but has many other interesting things like Sony Vegas and AVS.
