I wouldn't do it personally cos I'm a real girly girl :-) but definitely nothing wrong with it! I'd love to see photos!
XD friend of mine worked at security of one of those cons he made it able for me to see what what's going on I saw someone that had an costume of and card box XD I also saw cross dressers @_@
げんきですです。
I have more male characters on my cosplay list than females. I'm all for crossplay. ❤

Loads of people cross-cosplay at conventions so you definitely won't get any negative comments there. A few years a go me and some friends went as a Yu-gi-oh Abridged group. I went as Bakura and it was great fun. Although my current boyfriend would freak if I cosplayed as a guy now haha!

This is why I've always felt that the anime crowd is always one step ahead of everyone else in terms of respecting our fellow human beings. Seriously, like any form of being a dick (homophobia, sexism, etc.) is immediately frowned upon and shut down.
That's what I really feel is present at cons. Its sort of like, "awesome costume!" rather than, "You shouldn't dress up like a guy/girl."
I will never forget the pictures that my friend showed me of a dude dressed up as sailor moon and pulling it off. It totally changed my mind about what one can do and not do in terms of dressing up in a costume.
Me dressing up as a girl would be bad for the eyes....
i think it's fine to cross play and honestly never something i really expected to do again, myself. I cosplayed Spike spiegel, horribly i might add, when i was 16/17 ish and i wanted to redo it but with a more feminine twist. Pardon the derp face i'm making the photo below..i'm not done so it's a WIP XD I've seen loads of females doing guy characters and usually they end up binding. I-i don't think i could bind and feel remotely comfortable. I wanted to make a female version of spike spiegel and, without googling any images, decided to draw up my own idea. I'm not entirely sure i like how...bold...the blue stripes on the pockets came out but i can deal with it for now. The one thing that i've found that does bug me about the whole crossplay is when girls make a female version of a male character and sexualize it. It's fine to give it a more feminine look but it doesn't mean it needs cleavage/huge amounts of skin shown. I just find it silly personally. i tried to cover up as much of my chest as i could. Some skin showing was fine but i wanted to keep it classy. I felt like this contributed to more of what Spike is like: Classy but absolutely giving no craps lol. Well, he does, but in his own, unique, way. Hope i didn't offend anyone, just my 3 cents xD
I agree so much with you. And people out there are still saying, "Anime fans ! Arghhh ! Violent snd weird freaks !!!!"
Well, I have a list of characters I'd like to cosplay, and I basically won't choose to cosplay a female character (I'm a girl). Unless she's a really tomboyish character. Cuz I myself am very tomboyish so I'd target those male characters. nothing wrong with cosplaying as the opposite sex. I saw man cosplaying as maids in the Comic Fiesta in Malaysia last year, I was shocked and laughed so much about it, but now I think of it, I really admire their courage and their will. I never liked cosplayers last time, cuz I thought they embarrassed the anime characters by cosplaying them and not looking like them. By I changed after I went to cons. And I really respect them.

Life may be hard, it's a big pain in the butt. But hey, who says behind all those pain, can't hide some happiness ?
I think it is ok to cosplay an opposite gender but it is harder to cosplay well, but if you do it well you will attract more attention.
I agree with the prevailing sentiment in this thread that its best to do what you want. Whatever that may be.
The next most important thing is to do a character that you can pull off and pull off well.
For example if I would cross-cosplay Id be more apt to go with Riza Hawkeye from FMA than Serena from Sailor Moon haha. A bit easier to pull off while remaining fairly modest in my attire.
Its all about having fun while doing something you are excited about and comfortable with. If you confident in yourself people will be able to tell.
It is not that weird. I have seen plenty of great cross-play. I have several friends who routinely do so. Their parents occasionally say stuff to them like, "Why don't dress as female character instead?" and then go off onto a tangent where their sexuality is questioned. There is a long tradition of cross-play in the anime community.
If it makes you happy, do it! Go for it! ^__^
There are several females characters I would love to cosplay as, but I judge myself too hard for being a 6'3" guy.
