Water playing among the dapples that the shadows make
Hard to tell the threshold of the river from the lapping lake
What is me and what are marks from social forge
Watch the river slowly dying as the lake engorge

River will you tell me where you are going to
Will you exist when you meet the viral ocean blue
Will all those other rivers bend you counterfeit
Slowly becoming part of the Atlantic little bit by bit

Is there a message written—in your bows and breaks
And will it last when you vanish, swallowed by the lake
If there is can I with my tiny hands impoverished pilgrims take
Your relic from this shrine—remind me what’s at stake
