Default United States Army (Q&A ETC)

Well, I figured it's considering it's something I know quite a bit about, I'd like to have a discussion about it, whether it relates to piss tests or deployments.
I've been active duty army for two years now, and came back from my first deployment about a week and a half ago.
I'm more than willing to answer most any questions you have.
Though there is some stuff I'm NOT allowed to talk about concerning Afghanistan.
I'll let you know if your question falls into that region of secrecy. xD
    ASK AWAY/DISCUSS.

How many people return with PTSD/shell shock/war neurosis/whatever it's called nowadays? What is being done about the suicide statistics among these people? And you know, people being forced back into service even though they do not want to, and are clearly unsuitable (e.g. that guy who shot up civilians recently?)

I can't give exact statistics. Honestly because I don't know the statistics. I've been in several firefights myself.
The Army is fully offers programs to individuals who believe or know they have PTSD. (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder)
Not only does the Army offer counselling, but it offers help from both the civilian and army community in a number of classes and counselings.
They're free for anyone who wants to seek help.

As for the suicides. The army doesn't take the topic lightly, we are given classes every few months to remind soldiers to be aware
of the suicide statistics and what the army/civilian world has to offer for those seeking help.
It also reminds soldiers to watch out for the guys on their left and right, and if you notice any depressive symptoms, to let the chain of command know,
so that soldier can get the help he needs before it becomes to late.

When you enlist in the Army, you sign an 8 year contract. I signed up for four years active duty, and the other four years is inactive duty... Meaning I don't need to check in with anybody, I don't need to work out if I don't want to, etc. There is no 'draft.' The people who are being recalled are still under that eight year obligation if the army needs them. It's a contract that every soldier signs voluntarily, nobody is ever forced to join. If they were, then they need to take it to legal or something similar and have the issue resolved, because it's unlawful.

    @Korosuki
How come you joined the army in the first place?

Since you wrote that you have been in Afghanistan: for how long where you there (did you miss home a lot or was there so many other things to think of instead) and where you often afraid? If you where afraid what did you then do? Do you have nightmares or often think about your time there? It was after all so recently that you came back home, so I can imagine that it will take time to process what you have been threw.

Oh! Also what are your.... hm... "job" in the army? I mean, what are you trained for? Are you a normal footsolider or exactly what do you do?
Did you want to become that or did you want to become something else instead?

@SuXrys : I joined so I could protect my friends and family, and to fight for the people on my left and right; My brothers.

I spent 12 months in Afghanistan, with only a 15 day break where I was allowed to go home.
The first couple of months I definitely missed home and started to realize how much I had taken things for granted while I was back in the states.
But as the months went on I became accustomed to doing missions and working on a daily basis that I didn't think about home too much. I watched movies and played games on my computer for entertainment, and tried to get on the internet/use the phone when I could.

Near the beginning I was very afraid. My troop had heard all sorts of rumors about the area we went to, COP Nolen, we had heard that they were fighting everyday, and that people were dying and all sorts of crazy rumors. Not to mention most if not all the videos on youtube referring to COP Nolen are bad. So I assumed and feared for the worst. Of course- when we got there it wasn't at all as bad as they made it out to be. We never fought at COP Nolen, and instead did normal patrols.
All I did to deal with my fear was buck it up. When you're getting shot at, you can't just turn tail and run away, that'll get you killed. So instead of being scared, my mind went blank and I focused on all of my training, and did what I had to do to stay alive.

I do have nightmares, not about war though, it's probably just my mind winding down from the stress I dealt with while I was deployed. Though I quite often recall times I spent in afghanistan with friends, mostly humorous events, and stuff I probably shouldn't talk about xD

Naw, it really doesn't take time to process what I did. I know what I did, and I did what I did. Nothing to stress over.

My question would be, how difficult, or maybe unexpectedly easy, is life in the army, in terms of (but are not limited to) living conditions/accommodations, the problem of bullying/discrimination, and the pressure from both within and without the army?

Is the training for becoming a soldier really as tough as it looks in the movies? (like with the drill sergeants and obstacles?)

Also, do you guys wear earplugs when shooting off all of those big guns?

Mind telling us more about how the training looks like to become a soldier? Do you take tests before, how does it looks like during, how long does it take exc? Are any other familymembers of yours in the army?

What does the infantry actually do over there?

It sort of sounds like they'd have guys wander around until they got shot at or a roadside bomb went off. As opposed to not having them go out unless they had a specific mission (build this, guard that, check out these suspected houses or caves, etc)

@SuXrys : (PART TWO) I'm a 13F, a Fire Support Specialist. I'm a line platoon with all the infantrymen and scouts. My job is the same as theirs, I shoot my gun and kill the bad guy. Except for the fact that I also carry a radio and talk directly to, but not limited to, helicopters, fixed wing aircraft, mortars and artillery. I call for fire support in battle. And yes, I love it.
    Edit:
    Training consists of:
Multiple field exercises where you have people who play the enemy, and your commander gives you a task and purpose, you do a mission, take contact, react to contact, (Contact: When being attacked by the enemy,) etc. It's just practice runs to prepare you for the real thing. You also go to shooting ranges, and every day you exercise, monday through friday.
Also, no, I'm the only person in my family to ever join the military.

@animeyay : In the States, on post, as a single soldier, (not married) I get my own room, complete with a bed, desk, dresser, microwave, cabinets, a shower, a toilet, etc. It's like a really small version of an apartment. The only downside is that living in the barracks means room inspections, and some people can be really anal about how clean a room should be.
As for bullying and whatnot.. The Line platoon is all about sh*t talking. That's one of ways we cope with the stress of being in a dangerous combat zone. So no one person is targeted, instead everyone talks crap about everyone. But at the end of the day, we'll all brothers, and have each others' backs.
I don't really understand your last question though.

@Alisa althat; Basic was over two years ago for me.. Let's see. Yeah, they get up close in your face and yell. And yes, they break you down and build you up, and smoke you. (Smoking is an army term for messing up and having to do physical exercises as a punishment/corrective action.) Yes, they make you do obstacle courses.. Yes at times it can be really tough. Etc, the movies are similar in a way.. But not as right. Basic is mentally and physically difficult.
Uhh.. When we're training on a shooting range, yes, we wear earplugs. But.. If we're in afghanistan and we're getting shot at, no, we don't wear earplugs.. Though you don't really cringe at the sound because your adrenaline is rushing and you're more focused on the fight.

@sunnyside : No lol, We never wander around for no reason. We're always given a mission with a task and purpose, and we carry it out until it's mission complete, then we "RTB," or, Return to base. I can't tell you the missions we do. xD

Haha, You enjoying the military? I'm ex-Air Force. You might have seen me going through Ramstein on a C-17 on the way to Afghanistan. Depending if you went there over a year ago... Not sure if the Army is still screwing the soldiers over on deployments, but I'm sure they haven't changed much.

    My question:

How much emphasis was put on push-ups and sit-ups during boot camp for you?

I heard the army was wanting to do away them for more yoga and Pilates like workouts.

@Velvet ; Like I said basic was a LONG time ago. 2 years ago. We did push-ups and sit-ups everyday. And no, we still do rigorous physical exercises, no pilates or yoga.
Whoever told you that was DEAD wrong. Lawl.

I prolly should've read the thread first, lawl.
It was an article in the newspaper here a few years back. I was in Army JROTC at the time and I was like "lolwut" when I read it.

XDD I hear that. Good luck with it though. Army yoga and pilates = Push-ups, Pull-ups, and Sit-ups. ;P

@sataned ; You should talk to a recruiter if you want to join. I'm not one. xD

Talk to a recruiter, go to the Army website (or any branches' website), and/or look at wikipedia. But checking in with guys like me and Korosuki can help weed out the bull that recruiters try to sell you. But generally, the requirements (which can be waived) are no prior crap from joining or trying to join, no terrorist connects and stuff, and physical and medical stuff. Questions you'll be asked will primarily fall on is there any reason they shouldn't let you join, like a medical condition. Other than that, Try to survive Basic and AIT and you're in.
