Default Charlie Chapplin Speech "The Great Dictator"

Damn; I found this video really inspiring. Never heard of Charlie Chapplin before watching this; a friend posted it on my facebook one day.

So true; everything he talks about. I wish the music wasn't so loud for it though...

Machine men! With machine minds! And machine hearts! Lol; my favourite part of the video.

I know whatcha mean... I try and live by a certain set of princibles; or I used to before I watched this vid, then they changed. Now I try and help ANYONE and EVERYONE that I'm able to. Everything portrayed is entirely true; and the sad part is that this movie came out a LONG time ago, and yet things haven't really changed much; gotten worse if anything. So I do my best to try and even things out now; in my neck of the woods anyways ^^

There's not a whole lot to learn from this, and it's very vague.

One thing I see though is that there is a lot of bullying going on. It doesn't go away when you finish high school, it just changes in its nature. It changes from the big individual bully to the group bully. Everyone participates in order to make it feel like no single person is a culpable. It's like Dave Cook's rant about "that guy". The group bullies "that guy" and make "that guy" into the problem while not really helping them out.

So we like to help each other, but a lot of us like to put someone down to boost our own egos.

Ah; so true. I was guilty of this as well for the longest time, but not in the sense of bullying an outcast, it was in my group of friends. How everyone has that one dumb friend that kind'a gets made fun of a lot, and he does stupid things to try and fit in... I had one of those; but then I changed my tune on him and decided to make our friendship mean something more then 'paying him a dollar to eat a cigarette butt off the side of the road'; even though both me and him laugh about that now.

But in respects to the video... I think you're wrong about the vagueness of it. It's speaking in generality towards the governement, and people in general. It's not telling you how to change the world; it's just saying that we need to. He also speaks of what we need more, and could use less of.
To sum it up, we need more love and respect for one another; and less hate and discrimination. As well; our power as a people has diminished without reason. How come we can't decide on where our taxes are spent? How come we elect politicians that promise better healthcare, senior support, and job creation; and then they don't fulfill any of these promises; and instead work in the opposite direction of cutting everthing they promised to better.
We as a people need to come together and really focus in on these issues, and stop thinking of ourselves as 'one man, so what can I do?' Becuase if all 6 billion people in this world thinking the same thing were to come together then we could accomplish anything; and better this planet and succeed in the broken promises left by so many others.

And I believe that's the message of Charlie Chapplin in his speech.

I think it is a beautiful defense of the free world and everything, but in my view, videos like these that you find on the Internet only has real meaning insofar as the people who watch it are motivated to take the next step to actually go to the library to read a few books on freedom by authors like J.S. Mill, Karl Popper, Isaiah Berlin, or John Rawls, and to take the effort to formulate their own thoughts on the subject.

Otherwise, by itself, it just leaves you with a pleasant fuzzy feeling in your heart for about a day and not much else to show for.

Again; a very good point. 99 out of 100 people that watch it will get the feel good, pumped up for change moment and then move on with their lives. That's fine though; just posted the video because I thought it was cool and inspirational for a universal purpose. Not just changing the world; but just inspiration for anything good I think.

I was one out of the one hundred people that decided to look further into things as you said; although I never read any books on anything; just watched documentries and interviews, as well as online articles... the titles you listed, if you think that they're worth the read I'll check them out.
Seems as though you looked into this; would love to chat about it sometime!

This is my "inspirational speech" and I love it so much.
I don't know very much about Charlie Chaplin or the movie, but this speech makes me cry.. It's so filled with hope for everyone and everything.
It makes me want to do a difference, maybe just a small thing, but still a difference.
This is my favorit version of the speech:

Well, in that case, John Stuart Mill's classic On Liberty is a good place to start (you can find full copies of it online from the Wikipedia article). If you aren't yet accustomed to reading philosophy, the rest of the authors I listed may be a little too technical in nature to get through on first try.

Pretty speech, but incredibly naive. Hate and greed are natural parts of the human nature, just as kindness and curiosity. You might as well argue against going against voiding your bladder. Still, it’s a nice speech.
Had to dig through my FB timeline to find it in the depth of last October.
