Default Should we black out the sites against SOPA?

As you may know, Reddit and other sites are blacking out for a day on the 18th, http://www.reddit.com/r/SOPA/comment...tes_confirmed/ is a list of all the other sites joining in.

So the question I have is this, should we, or shouldn't we join in with all of the sites?

This is basically a poll, but I really want to hear reasons, so please post a yes or no, and make the argument for your claim! At the moment, I see good reasons for both courses of action, and we would certainly be impacted if SOPA becomes law.

To read more about the why's, this is the statement from reddit along with useful links.

You already know I'm for it. A show of solidarity among sites that will benefit the most from SOPA not passing is something I believe in.

A more complete list of sites participating, big and small: http://sopastrike.com/on-strike/. Keep in mind though that about 1/4 the way down people were just adding whatever, and the site isn't fact checking a lot of them. Gmail, Facebook and AOL aren't blacking out.

My answer to the question: a big, resounding YES.

The reason: Well, let's face it. We understand that piracy is a big thing ... but for all my two cents is worth, this proposed law is a direct breach of our freedom and privacy as individuals and citizens of our own countries. This is basically the start of a conversion to a "Big Brother" state, where we have no choices in freedom, are told what we can and can't do and honestly, that's just not right.

It will start with censorship of the Internet, and then what's next? Censorship everywhere else.

I'm not going to say anything else. Well, except you might want to consider adding a poll, but that's entirely your decision to be fair o_o

YES!!!! Please... SOPA not only blocks sites with copyrighted content but also sites with the chance to have copyright content on it. AF falls into that category. We have copyrighted content in our user signatures and avatars and banners. We did not make them but since we have them we could be blocked if SOPA were to pass.

Congress does not understand how broad that bill is and how much it expands, what it targets and pretty much, they don't understand ANYTHING.

I support AF having a blackout AGAINST sopa as we may get blacked out if SOPA were to pass! Which I do not want to happen!!! <3 AF

I say go for it. If it means making a step towards keeping our internet rights and freedoms, then by all means. Like blueangel says, this can definitely impact us a lot more than the bill probably intended.

Default Re: Should we black out the sites against SOPA?

Alright, I guess I'm the first one to say this: I'm against the blackout. I am vehemently against SOPA, but I don't support the idea of a blackout.

I don't understand what purpose it would serve in the long run. I can sorta understand how Reddit is going to do it: they are going to blackout the website and put links for people to look up more information about SOPA. I understand that much (and only that much; that "amplify the voice of the community" bit is something I don't get, but I will touch upon that).

But everyone else? Is everybody who is doing a blackout going to put up links about SOPA or is this about standing one's ground and showing solidarity? The former is a bit overkill in my opinion and the latter makes no sense. Sure, if a big name website does a blackout, that would be big. But pardon me, no one (certainly not the legislators that are trying to pass the law) cares about a website dealing with LOLcats or Sonic the Hedgehog or an anime forum. The only people who use these websites are the people involved in the subculture associated with them; outside of this, unless they have nerdy friends, those lawmakers don't even know that those websites even exist. So why would they care if these sites went down?

As someone pointed out already, there is a possibility that websites could shut down because of this law. In light of this, what would be the point of shutting them down?

"You wanna shut me down, then I will." Wait, what?

It's a great way to make me feel better, but the government doesn't care if I have to "suffer" through one day without fail blogs, Minecraft, and an anime forum.
    This is my war face.

This is what happens to trolls who mess with me.

@wolfgirl90 It's more of a wake-up call to some people... The bill is passing through probably faster than you can imagine. If sites [big and small] protest it by just shutting down that says a LOT.

[it'll get COVERAGE!!! Did you know that only Internet articles are covering SOPA but TV stations are NOT?!
If a mass swarm of sites suddenly just shut down.. People are going to TALK ABOUT IT. Lots and LOTS of people.. As it's never happened before.

This is the internet we're talking about. The best way to protect the internet is through the internet. The internet is a powerful source and when you get people together on the internet you can achieve great things. Going on strike via. the internet is more helpful than just standing aimlessly outside congress yelling at some bricks.

You fight fire with fire, internet with internet. Sure they don't care that YOU can't failblog or whatever.... But if more and more sites just halt for a day... Maybe they'll think.. HEY... maybe we shouldn't do this.. and more and more people will be interested in SOPA.. Because a lot are sort of at the -shrug- stage right now. But WE NEED ACTION! And I'm not talking about getting on a train and going to D.C. I'm talking about the entire internet, big and small, standing up for their rights/internet rights ON THE INTERNET!

Yes ma'am! Honestly, I didn't hear about SOPA until I read this thread. So I wanted to see what all the huss was about, so I researched it on the internet. That's disgusting that they would even try to pass something as ridiculous as SOPA; as most people are saying it will affect ALL internet sites is some way or another.

The fact that there is zero coverage on TV is disturbing; this is a major news story, one that pretty much affects every single individual, and no news station wants to cover it? I wonder if they were payed off to turn a blind eye on this one

Ranshiin took the words from my mind, ace. I wholly support a blackout. If you wish me to delve into the reasoning deeper than Ran did... you'll have to wait until I get home.

And I'm not talking about getting on a train and going to D.C. I'm talking about the entire internet, big and small, standing up for their rights/internet rights ON THE INTERNET!
I would understand it if a large number of sites got together and did a blackout. That would certainly get the word out. At the moment, however, we only have a few, and that small number of websites appeal to certain subcultures. Unless we can get some big name websites involved, websites whose shutdown would affect a very large amount of people, most people are not going to even experience the blackout, let alone be affected by it. I'll admit this right now: Explosim is the only confirmed site that I use; everything else, I barely even knew of their existence until today, so I wouldn't know if they had a blackout or not (and this is coming from a nerd; imagine it for someone who wasn't invested in Internet and pop culture).

I mean, if we had organized this better, planned this out, and gotten the word some more, I wouldn't have had too much of a problem with it. However, this "mass" blackout is based on something Reddit announced on Thursday for an event next Wednesday, leaving less than a week for websites to figure out what they want to do and how. As it stands, we have some video game websites, a site about messed up cakes and some sites dealing with cats with poor grammar and epic fails. Not really "end of the Internet" material.

Another thing I will admit is that I actually hate protests like this, if only because people tend to go through the motions. For example, there was something on Facebook about people refusing to buy gas for the weekend to protest rising gas prices. Seemed like an okay idea, until people admitted that they were going to fill up the Thursday before the "protest", which would defeat the point (if companies got the money that you going to spend anyway, why would they care about you not using their pumps later?). It was a great way for people to feel as if they were doing something, but not much else.

If the sites blackout, are the people involved with these sites going to be involved in anti-SOPA activities throughout the day? Or are people still going to be on the Internet, just skipping over the sites that are going through the blackout, or even worse, just sitting on their bum watching Big Bang Theory, Two and a Half Men, and NFL highlights, only moving to grab a Marvel comic for the bathroom?

Well it seems that you do not want a large number of groups to come forward it shouldn't matter if the sites are big or small. It shouldn't matter if one site doesn't have much of a base. All that matters is that you stood up for it and hoped to make an impact. Sure AF's name won't be called to the podium to take the prize but yeah. By doing this we help raise the number... And actually the list reflects a majority of the people who use the internet and who CARE.

Oh and relate THIS to gas prices? Complaining about gas prices are for cheap whiny individuals who still pay $50 for a shirt and drive cars that only get like 12MPG.

We are not giving any money to this. We are simply showing... You want to control the internet... Well this is what will happen... "Oh look, I can't get on this site I've been going to for 10yrs because it's potentially harmful and may host copyrighted material somewhere.. Thanks for deciding for me"

It is a privilege to drive a car. It is a right of freedom to be able to use a worldwide tool like the internet for how you please without doing something illegal like look at child pronz.

Other countries do not have rights to browse the internet without the govt. coming in. That's why we're free to browse the internet without the govt. controlling what we look at. But if we let them take this right away, well be no different than China, Korea etc.

I'd actually like to say that the goals are quite different here. The gas company protest is pointless because yes, you are just buying the same amount of gas, only shifting it by a day. Here the goal is more to reach out to the people who may be affected but don't know it, and get them to call their congresscritters, or join the cause.

Indeed. The problem is that conventional media so far has boycotted the issue completely. By blacking out a large portion of the internet, it will come to people's attention no matter how hard TV is ignoring the issue.

To be honest, it wouldn't surprise me if conventional media are boycotting this because they've been told to. Who else would be surprised if they were to hear that the US government had 'spoken' to newspaper and television media?

But yeah, as Blueangel has said. The only way to highlight the severity of the impact this will have on the internet, we must in fact demonstrate, nay simulate what will happen if this law passes. People may be sat at home browsing Facebook and being completely oblivious to the whole issue - "Oh, it'll do something to the Internet, why should I care? It won't affect me, I don't do anything wrong. I don't download music illegally, I don't use shifty web-sites, it won't affect me." - and then on the 18th, one or two of the websites they've come to accept as commonplace will suddenly go POP for a whole day, and they're going to realise the extent of the possible implications when they can't access a website they've become accustomed to using.

I mean, I read that list of confirmed 'high-profile' websites ... AF being on there, as is expected ... but seeing Sonic Retro on there too (and I'm on there a lot) highlights just how much people are taking this seriously. It's something that we can't just ignore.
: The Game. You just lost it. :

    I say no.

Why? Because I'll have nothing to do if AF blacks out! ;.; The chat accounts for at least half my day.

But if everyone decides to do it, I must abide by the group decision.

I think it should. I'm not American, so I can't really do anything about SOPA, but I'm betting that I would be affected nonetheless. Not to mention that if America can get away with it, it is a frightening precedent for everything else.

Also, I didn't know that SOPA even existed until this Friday. If sites black out on the 18th in protest of it, it will certainly be informative for those internet-surfing, but politics-ignorant people like me.
