Err...wanna reel that in just a little bit? To make the assumption that coffee would never have been allowed to be consumed by public markets today simply because it's addictive is an intensely bold statement and one that's incredibly naive.
As GameGeeks said, the caffeine in coffee is what makes it additive and caffeine is present in A LOT of things: chocolate, tea, sodas. Hell, your average can of Jolt has TWICE the amount of caffeine as a cup of coffee (and kindly spells it out for people on the can). And since the word "drug" has the very broad definition of anything that alters bodily function (when absorbed into the body), we can also include alcohol and virtually every energy drink.
