Turns out the bomb was not actually explosive, but was made out to look that way.

It's possible they didn't have one of those peeping hole gizmos in the door. Or he could have been facing away from the door, or been out of sight, and subdued her when she opened the door to figure out what was going on. But I suppose he may have used a bump key as well.
