Default Staph found in almost half of all US meats

Almost half of the meat and poultry sold at U.S. supermarkets and grocery stores contains a type of bacteria that is potentially harmful to humans, a new study estimates.
Researchers tested 136 packages of chicken, turkey, pork, and ground beef purchased at 26 grocery stores in five cities around the country, and found that 47 percent contained Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus), a common cause of infection in people.

What's more, roughly half of the contaminated samples contained strains of the bacteria that were resistant to at least three antibiotics, such as penicillin and tetracycline. Some strains were resistant to a half dozen or more.

Staph can, yes, but this is actually really nothing new.

yes. but the study doesn't mention anything regarding fish.

Chicken, I would imagine, would be the prime offender here though.

Key word is potentially dangerous. I mean, bacteria are basically everywhere. We really can't do anything about it, other than wash our hands and cook our food properly. I don't like things that are potentially dangerous. Either there is a realistic threat, or there isn't. A huge amount of things carry insignificant risks of horrible mutilation and death. Even leaving the house leaves you threatened by the potential of death by meteor.

Another important point is that you generally need a critical concentration of bacteria before they're actually dangerous. A single bacterium isn't going to be a realistic threat to anyone.

I do believe that fish is more harmful; especially those that reside higher in the food web, like salmon. However, so long as it isn't the primary part of one's diet it shouldn't be an issue.

Staph bacteria don't bioaccumulate. But seafood is bad for different reasons, depending on where it's caught. In some parts of the world it will have a lot of dioxins and heavy metals.

I wasn't talking about staph, the second part of your statement is what I was referring to. However, I'd still recommend cooking your fish.

I often find that not enough problems in my life can be solved with a grill and barbecue sauce, so let's take advantage of this one.

Really, though, just cook your food well and wash your hands after handling uncooked chicken and you're fine.

O_O This whole thing reminds me about the book "The Jungle" about he reporter that went undercover to work in Chicagos Meat packing plants and such discusting things that he wrote articles and eventually published the book. Things were so bad that after Teddy Roosevelt read the book he put into effect the agencies we have today for checking our food. I guess it still needs improvement...

No, just no. Finding bacteria in uncooked meat is like finding fish in the sea. This is in no way like what Upton Sinclair was writing about in The Jungle; it's more a restating of the obvious.

I trust my stomach acid to do the disinfection. =)
Although come to think about it, my stomach got really sick only once in my entire life, so I say the chances are very low that I'll get anything potentially serious.
But yes, it's still a good idea to cook your food thoroughly. You can never be too safe...

Default Re: Staph found in almost half of all US meats

The other problem is that the bacteria are resistant to antibiotics. However, according to the story I read, chicken was the least dangerous in that regard. The worst was turkey, then pork, then beef. Chicken will get you with salmonella though, and beef can carry e.coli. Proper cooking will take care of all of them assuming your kitchen and hands are clean.
