Space agency officials confirmed feasability studies were under way to asses whether astronauts could be permanently sent to the red planet, or its moons, to establish human colonies.

The multi-billion pound mission, titled Hundred Years Starship, is being spearheaded by the Ames Research Centre, one of NASA’s main research centres, based in Moffett Field, California.

Officials from the Pentagon’s Defence Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) are also heavily involved in turning the science fiction idea into a reality.

Aunty NASA wants me? Sure, I'm a pretty bad enough dude to go on a one-way trip to Mars, I'm a great fan of the DOOM series, and wouldn't mind a few abnormal cataclysms that need be fixed by shotgun and survival. Only thing is, I want the space labs, mines, malls and other infrastructure to be already build when I get there, so I'd have what to smash and break.

If given the opportunity, I might bite. Sounds interesting and I think I'd prefer sub zero temperatures to Australia's heat waves. I kinda like the idea of them providing supplies too. It would make it seem less like a job and more like a new lazier way of life.

As things currently stand in my life I would without a doubt take the opportunity.

I say go for it. You might become of of those unsung heroes that pave the way for human colonization on the Moon, Mars or beyond. Even though you might died, maimed or having dementia, they will recognized the part you did for history, even it takes several decades or century. You might write a book about your exploits and see how the government, big corporation and the public will react on that. They will go herpderp about it.

I would want to go to Mars, but I would not want to go FIRST. Everyone knows NASA always fails the first time. They'd probably forget a number in the trajectory calculation and end up a** first in the Sun.
