Apatheism

Apatheism is essentially atheism, but better. It basically says, "There could be a God, but frankly, I don't care enough to try to find out if there really is."

What are your opinions on it? do you think it is just a lazy belief, or is it an intelligent way of thinking? Do you see any flaws in apatheism?


Personally, I love apatheism. It is what I "believe" in. Why should I care if there is a God, I'd rather focus on the here and now, not the potential next.

That's what I emphasize to people when I am asked about my religious belief.
I always say, "I'm apathetic, not atheistic. I frankly don't care about religion."

I don't know about you, but I like getting paid. So, yeah, I do care if there is a job.

Nah, there's a level of laziness there that I just don't feel when it comes to matters of faith. I have my beliefs and while I can't be bothered to try and deny anyone else's, if someone attempted to tell me what I believe is wrong without some pretty convincing evidence I'd stonewall them to hell and back.

It's not atheism. Atheism asserts there is no god.

It's more like agnosticism as a result of laziness.

A comparison to agnosticism doesn't seem correct either. I consider myself agnostic, not out of laziness, lack of conviction, or a fear of becoming an atheist (all things agnostics are accused of), but simply due to logic. I have neither been convinced nor unconvinced as to the existence of a supreme being. It's not a subject I ponder daily, but one I believe warrants some thought. That said, apatheism sounds, to me, like a simple way of retorting in a religious discussion without having to reflect. Not a way I'd want to live, but I'm not bothered by someone else wanting to.

Agnosticism comes in two varieties: Hard Agnosticism is like "I can't know", while Soft Agnosticism is summarized by "I don't know" or "I am uncertain". Apatheism is close to the latter.

So in a sense it's like "I won't know"? Following on from what you said ... seeing the first one as someone unable to see the knowledge, and the second one as someone who doesn't yet see the knowledge, the third one (which I just brought up) would mean someone who is able to see the knowledge but doesn't want to know the knowledge ... as in, indifferent to the offer of knowledge.

Hard agnosticism includes stuff like theological noncognitivismwiki and ignosticismwiki, which states that the very concept of "god" is poorly defined and/or unfalsifiable, so the statement "god exists" is meaningless (until the word 'god' is refined to something testable.)

A soft agnostic is agnostic because she isn't sufficiently convinced in either direction, and so defaults to the "I don't know" camp.
