Default What AF Means to You

You may sob, as you type your reason, but the question arises: what does AF mean to you? Your answer can range from "bursts into tears!" "eye-rolling" or the best one "apathy."

As for myself, my reason is simple. I've said it from the start when I came here in April of 2011: love. I call AF the Greatest Anime Forum In This World because I truly mean it. It has been a light for me, a place where I can discuss anime that I'm interested in with others, and most of all, it shaped who I am as a person from 21 to 27 on the 30th of this month. AF is great, it's awesome, it's everything I want in a forum. This forum gave me a second chance in the forum universe, so to speak, and I hope others agree that we wouldn't trade each other for the world, no matter how many haters go after innocent users. It's their loss. I love AF and someday my kids will love it too, if they get into anime as well. I'd like to thank the users who made me feel at home here. God bless you, active users, and may you have this space to post your feelings for a long time. Long live AF!!

That's a tough question. I first started coming to AF to read some posts, comment once in a while and make some friends. Through the years I have been here, I've mostly stayed because of the amazing people I have met here and the friendships I have made. :3

"Greatest anime forum in the world".

Its just not and that's a fact. The place is nostalgia, but if it got deleted I would probably nod and say "Well, I knew it". The site is absolute garbage, but has at least good memories.

Though, it is home of some of the most thinned-skinned, whiny, hypocritical people I have ever seen.

A long time ago, this site used to be a place I would come to all the time throughout my high school and early college years to chat with friends I've made here and put my 2 cents on threads I replied to (mostly Misc). I rarely posted in the anime part of the forums (go figure). Before I joined here, I used to think people who post on anime forums (or forums in general) were really cool and I always wanted to be apart of that. That's what led me here and to other forums. Heck, I had the same opinion as you about this site being the greatest thing ever.

Nowadays, this site doesn't have as much meaning as it used to. I'm glad it's still here, but I only ever check in once in a blue moon to check messages or view the Misc forum. None of my friends are around anymore, so that's why I'm never here, plus the Misc forum isn't as interesting to me anymore. About 7 years back was the peak of my fun here. I just realized it's been like 10 years since I joined this site. I'm actually a little sad typing this.

I can't comment on the thin-skinned, whiny & hypocritical elements, though I can at least be honest and say that my feelings toward this place are purely motivated by nostalgia.

Over-jubilance and claims of "best ever" aside, I actually preferred the old chatrooms to the forums because they always seemed to be teeming with life. Logging into the chat now seems to be an exercise in futility, and as far as I'm aware, the Discord chatroom isn't advertised at all. I actually had to find it through post-stalking via the search system.

Speaking from experience, the Discord chatroom is relatively dead besides a handful of frequent posters. Even more amusingly, if you talk about anime on the Discord chat it is considered to be a rarity in terms of topic discussion. Sort of crazy considering the title is: "Anime Forum."

It simply isn't the same as it used to be here, so I can't share the enthusiasm in making claims of "best ever" when the elements I considered to be the best no longer exist.

Similar circumstances and feelings here, so this post really did speak to me.

Actually, I've been looking up several old communities I used to be a part of during my formative years and they've either vanished, are unrecognizable or are now inhabited by a completely new userbase that knows nothing of the one that preceded it.

Hate to sound like a pessimist, but after about a decade, it seems as though all these pleasant memories and interpersonal relationships formed online tend to just fizzle out and dissipate into the ether. If you're a sentimental type like me, you end up wondering what happened to all those people you spent countless hours hanging out online with – The reality? They've vanished, are uncontactable and you'll likely never speak to them again.

Maybe they've reinvented themselves elsewhere online, have found something more constructive to do with their time or have "grown out" of internet communities due to a heavier focus on IRL/AFK matters. They may have even grown out of these hobbies altogether entirely and found something else to spend countless hours discussing under a different guise.

All I can say is, focus on the now.

Find a new, active and thriving community and make new friends there.

    Enjoy it while it lasts.

I always love your posts. Well, in your short time back you've probably noticed (I mean this naive thread is living proof of the cancer that killed this website to begin with) that almost no users engage in noteworthy conversation here anymore and some of the people here lock themselves in a bubble and isolates themselves from any and all conflict. The thing is, the OP of this this thread and other users is what helped killed this website and these types of threads make me sick because they're claiming they love AF, but are apart of one of the core issues with this website.

People like colorful members full of personality and engage in conversation. Being scared of conflict and hiding yourself in a thin-skinned bubble is making this website extremely boring and ruining it further and further. Then you had the moderators claim this website was getting more active (even though it really wasn't and was only a mirage) and deflecting all issues with the website by saying "quit if you don't like it" or "AF is fine!". Users have quit due to the naive nature and boring nature of people here and its ironic what the OP sees good in this website is what is driving more and more people away.

I come off as harsh sometimes, but my disgust with some users here is extremely high. They're destroying this forum by thinking they're making it better.

I'm honestly surprised you haven't thrown in your cards long before now, yet, you certainly seem to have a personal stake in this. After reading that blog post you made once upon a time, I really got a feeling for the decline of activity here over the years and how vexing it was to keep patching it up, so to speak. At this stage, I don't think making – For lack of a better term – "circlejerk" threads is really going to cut it in regards to reigniting any sort of flame of activity.

If I had to describe it, most threads feel like visiting a grave and laying flowers upon it while delivering some form of pseudo-poetic nostalgic praise. That's just not healthy.

The stark reality is that the old style of forum communities seem to have became passé now in the eyes of the status quo. I have a fondness for them having grown up using them, but are they sustainable? Only if they remain relevant and up to date stylistically, providing frequent new interactive content and so forth. In the past, forums tended to get the latest "news" from other sources and pass it off as their own findings without even particularly citing a source – I can't knock it, since it made them seem like a reliable source of information with their finger on the pulse of their respective choice of media.

Truthfully, I don't think people really gave much of a damn about downloadables, picture galleries or news articles though ... They did give a damn about an active community/chatroom in which they could interact with & socialize with likeminded individuals. If you're spending excess amounts of time online, you're likely looking for a community to participate in.

Text roleplay was also a pretty big deal, and still is. I couldn't believe people started doing it on Twitter years back, given the character limit for text entries. It just goes to show that people want to experience some form of interactive escapism online, whatever the format.

There's absolutely no way I can disagree with you. The mentality of "quit if you don't like it" or pretending everything is fine hasn't particularly helped matters here. You can only pretend for so long, and when you face reality, being told to leave for simply accepting the truth strikes me as terribly detrimental.

@Vincent Valentine - Yes! I understand everything grows and changes. The mindset of the forum members will continue to change with time and I do grasp that. Though, not when its actually killing the forum in all its strange irony. The thing is, most of these people don't realize they're helping in killing this forum more and more and yes OP I am talking to you as well. I've been painted as a mean guy who bullies others.... when in reality I am like so many other users on so many other forums and this safe space some of you guys have adopted is truly sickening. Sickening. Damn sickening.

When will some people realize that this forum is boring because you guys continue to make it boring? People have quit and people laugh at this website because nobody even tries to contribute in a fashion that showcases our personality. Instead, people act like cardboard cutouts and whine when any form of engagment happens here which is absolutely stupid.

    I mean:

Exhibit 1: Last year I dissed the new Sailor Moon and gave my opinion in a thread and some girl got pissed at me and literally said "Why do you have to come on AF and ruin my love for Sailor Moon?" Like, boofrickenhoo. Girl quit and showcased how thinskinned people are.

Exhibit 2: Last year I made a thread and some guy posted in my thread. Since it was my thread I felt the need to quote him and disagree and the guy got pissed because I was opposing his opinion and said "Nobody needs conflict". Like, why are you posting then?

Exhibit 3: This OP. Oh god this guy fanboys over Digimon and disses other shows he doesn't even watch WHICH MAKES NO SENSE and when I call him out, he goes into his bubble, makes threads like this and once again paints this engagement as wrong.

Exhibit 4: PictureGuy. I quoted him and teased him and he got pissed and told me (one of AF's most active members) to leave AF and go to AnimeNation because I was an donkey and being a meanie pants.

That's only a few examples. Wth is wrong here?

Its time for this to stop. Painting AF as the best forum ever while ruining this site further by ironically thinking you're helping it is sickening. Makes me feel sick.

Nice to know my post struck a chord and you can relate.

I gotta say that the same thing happened to me. However, that happened to a lot of other people here too.

What you said reminds me of why some people are afraid to fall in love, because they think nothing lasts forever and even love eventually fades. The memories don't fizzle out though.

I think what you say is true, but it was honestly way more active back before the site crashed and got re-done (could be a contributing reason!).

In all honesty, I haven't really been able to. AF has always been my first real community and I'm not the type to adapt to change so easily or try new things without extreme hesitation or without bias. In real life, I'm a lone wolf. Always been that way.

I don't think you're harsh in this matter. You said what needed to be said. Heck, you're right about me IMO. It's because this place isn't lively and festive anymore that I myself am contributing nothing. I can go on and on about how active this forum was or how more full of life a lot of past members were, but that doesn't change anything. It may be difficult, but I believe this place can become livelier. As for myself, I would love more actual discussions, rather than just games or one word/sentence post threads.

Its time for this to stop. Painting AF as the best forum ever while ruining this site further by ironically thinking you're helping it is sickening. Makes me feel sick.
    Times have really changed.

I can't comment on individual people here without really having experienced them to a more personal degree, but the "safespace" mentality is quite a widespread phenomena nowadays. It doesn't just apply to online communities, but the entire Western world at large – Or so it would seem.

I don't seem to hear of it happening elsewhere in the world.

Yes, we live in a modern day environment that is largely without conflict and the majority of people have become willingly neutered and pacified. People don't face consequences for poor behaviour due to applying some sort of self-purported mental condition to explain their lack of social awareness.

The most retaliation you're going to get is some passive-aggressive snark from a self-designated "victimized" individual.

I think the worst part of the present day, in my opinion, is that people are indeed hesitant to voice any opinion that conflicts with the status quo. That isn't exactly a new phenomena, but more and more, people are policing themselves and excising what may be deemed "offensive" from their dialogue to keep things stable.

If there is no debate or conflict of opinion, then all you have are a vast amount of boring, lifeless automated husks that had the potential to be human beings that want everything their way – No contest.

I've experienced these sensations myself on an almost daily basis, so I can truly empathize with what you're saying. I suppose this sort of talk could be deemed as subversive dissent, yet I believe one simply has to face the truth at some point.

I can obviously relate to that sensation, though my comment was also brought about by something welling up inside me. Certainly, I'm very much like you in the sense that I am fiercely hesitant and reluctant to change – If you're nostalgic, it's essentially your undeniable weakness.

To toss a cliche in here: "If it ain't broke, don't fix it."

    That's the mentality we have.

Though I'm personally growing disheartened by the lack of activity here, and if I'm being honest, I'm somewhat disturbed by the level of denial that I've personally witnessed.

When I'm saying find somewhere new, active and thriving to make new friends at, I'm saying it from the point of view of retaining one's sanity. I also touched upon the inevitable reality that even a new community that is full of people and bustling with life will eventually fall silent.

Hence the grim "enjoy it while it lasts" addendum.

Kinda just a place for me to hang out.

I made a few good friends on here, only one of which I really talk to nowadays, and they don't come here much I think.

I kinda do miss the old days, but as long as everyone I knew is doing well, then I'm happy.

There weren't many anime fans around here growing up so I always felt like a loner and I never had anyone to talk to about anime. So this website really opened some boundaries for me and I probably wouldn't have been as extroverted as I today if it wasn't for it. Now people can't get me to shut up and it's interesting.

I always tried to mold myself into someone that everyone would love just because as I've mentioned before I was an introvert and getting so much attention was new and pleasing for me. Yet I started acting like someone I'm not and I had to leave the forum for a while. I think I've grown as a person over the years because of all my experiences. I've learned not to hold back on anything no matter how embarrassing it may be or what kind of reactions I might get. Because at the end of the day you will eventually find people that treasure you and love you for who you are and once you find those people nothing else matters. I still have some people from this forum that I talk to whom I've know for 8+ years and they will be my friends always. But not only that, these experiences have helped me make more friends irl that I probably wouldn't have made if I stayed the same.

This place may be just one random community out of millions out there but it will always hold a special place in my heart. So thank you AF for all those wonderful years where I was an active member and for all the friends I've made.

Tl;dr AF will always be awesome

To me, AF embodies the "glory days" of forums as a medium.

I cannot speak to the general popularity/relevance of forums in the zeitgeist; maybe forums are not any less popular than they were a decade ago, but I certainly visit them less frequently. And, in my admittedly limited experience, what discussions I do have on forums cannot rival the quality of the experiences I had at AF "back in the day"

When I first joined AF, I remember folks actually reached out to me after I made an Introduction thread. I cannot imagine a similar phenomenon occurring now. Browsing forums today, I expect to remain essentially anonymous. Hell, I would probably be suspicious if someone just PMed me out of the blue to introduce themselves.

I feel like the internet was a smaller, friendlier place when AF was in its "prime." That's nostalgia for ya, I suppose?

Despite having the artistic talent of a twig, seeing users' signatures in AF threads inspired me to learn a little Photoshop, lest I feel left out while posting, I still have the artistic ability of an inanimate object, but my lasting interest in and appreciate of digital art and design was probably born from my time here.

TL;DR - The nostalgia is strong. I mean, I haven't posted in like 5 years and I just decided to login today to swing by <3

I come to Anime Forum to vent some thoughts or feelings about a show I just watched. Its nice to find discussions of these shows because anime is so niche its not like all my friends watch this stuff. So Ill read 10 year old posts about Neon Genesis Evangelion and Im like "this dude is dead on!" haha its like following digital footprints. I love how everything is time stamped in forums its cool to read old posts that have replies from years later. Makes me think about how behind I am!

I really like this forum, except that it just isn't too active, like MAL for instance, but I always like the look and feel of the forum. As I said before, I wanted the members of the old, dying A4 forum to switch over to this forum, but they got it into their thick, idiotic skulls to form a new forum, (Sakuga City), from their old membership , and I didn't want any part of it. It's too bad too, A4 had many active members who would have helped this forum, and I really did think that this was a good forum to move to for the A4 members. It's too late now though

The forum got me to want to learn how to use Photoshop.
    Progressed quickly.

There's been mostly good times, but also some bad. Like how I learned that some people can be so damn fake.
Became less naive because of that.

Never got a happy birthday thread, so hmpf :P

But the forum I'm a forum mod on holds that special forum place in my heart.
Lacks acitity over there too, but at least it's 90% quality posts and not just misc posts and bot posts. (no bots over there)

Before I begin, I should quote a user named Teurlinx from a completely unrelated forum, where I was learning about why you shouldn't revive a dead thread:

The necromancer has a supernatural ability to bring long-dead forum discussion threads back to life. After having been flogged to death the thread may have been deceased for many years, and bringing it back may have scant relevance to the current topic, yet Necromancer will unexpectedly exhume the thread’s rotting corpse, and strike horror in the forum as its grotesque form lurches into the discussion. The monster, instantly recognized by all who knew it in life, seems at first to breathe and have a pulse, but, alas, it is beyond Necromancer’s skill to fully restore the thread’s original vitality. The hideous apparition may frighten away some of the weaker Warriors or Warriors badly wounded in former battles, but the thread is only a shadow of its former self and very quickly expires.
Hopefully I'm not going to that extreme by telling my AF story, for I feel it's at least half on-topic.

Back in January of '07, I was in sixth grade. My buddy Justin and I would always try to find chat communities online while at school, but to no avail. The school's website blocking program was phenomenal, every time we found one it was blocked the next day. One day, Justin came to me and said he'd found a site he'd been trying for weeks and was still unblocked! I made my account that same day on animeforum.com, with no knowledge of Japanese animation, and still none to this day. We joined this site solely for the human interaction, if you will. Subject matter was of least importance.

In the beginning of my AF life, I was your worse-than-average nooblet. It was quite amusing for us sixth graders to get banned from the chat room every day we could. Seventh grade came, and I actually tried legitimately chatting with people, instead of swearing five times in a row in all caps. I started browsing the (Misc) forums as well, not posting very often, but learning about the community I was slowly becoming a part of.

    Welcome to Chaos.

I read those words every day upon login, and relished it every time. It almost always was chaos in Chaos. Even when the online members began dropping from the mid to high 20s down to fifteen regulars, and some friends came on less and less frequently, Chaos was my online home. I could be anywhere in the state, the country, even the world, and I could have logged onto AF Chat and been with my second family.

In 2009, I began a friendship with an AF user named Bou, only to start online dating in 2012. Every regular in chat was so supportive, and only wished the best for us. 2013 came and she moved across the entire USA just to be with me, and we've been together happily ever since.

If it wasn't for AF, I would never have met my love. I would never have made so many friends from all over the world. I would never have been recommended from the site mods to buy a new Lenovo ThinkPad to replace my aging IBM.

So many memories, so much nostalgia. No matter what happens to AF, if it outlives me or dies tomorrow, it will always be held high in my heart. These memories won't die, won't fade, won't 'fizzle' because AF gave me some of the best times I've ever had in front of a computer, and I can't thank you all enough for what you've done for me.

Thank you, Anime Forum, for being part of my life for eleven years, six months, and three weeks at the time of this writing. It's been one hell of a ride, and I hope it's not over for a long time to come.

Sig and avvie set by the wonderfully talented and amazing Bou. <3

Featuring the laptop I always used to complain and talk about in chat.

I may not use it anymore, but I still have it!

What does AF mean to me?... AnimeForum, of course! Duh. XD

But in seriousness, AF for me was the ultimate escape from life at home, school, and work (later in life). Watching my brother log into the Tuxedo Mask Chat back in the day, then joining in from the Anime Globe Chat early on, finally registering a few years later after AnimeForum had been made, then forgetting the forum until a girl irl at the Moose Lodge reminded me of it and asked me to join (lol The irony), after that was a blur of chat and forum nonsense and fun until I graduated high school. I periodically checked in from time to time until 2010 when I found more time, and afterwards I was able to devote even more time to the site. Other forums were okay, but AF was just more for me.

There's a lot of nostalgia, good ideas, and ideas that never panned out. The RPG Fight game was a must on the vB3 days. Making a character, fighting other peoples' characters in a turn based battle, posting to get Rupees to buy new weapons and armor, or being lucky enough to have someone gift you some items. Then the Arcade, tons of fun for a decent run; loads of games to play and a few people with way to much time on their hands getting most of the high scores. lol The Art Contests were always a blast for me, such a lot of talent to be seen. All of them were great and fun, but unfortunately none of them could last with time.

Is AnimeForum the best forum ever? To me, yes. To everyone all over the internet, probably not. But for me, it's the best because of the people here and connections and stories we share. As @Srk shared, he found his love here. And I know for a fact he's not the only member to do so. And I also know plenty that have tried it and failed... And it's brought friends together across states and around the world. I would've never visited Slovenia without AF, or met personally with several other users either around the US either.

Reading some of the posts, it makes me laugh though. People complaining about AnimeForum Chat never talking about Anime. HAHAHA! That complaint has been around since the dawn of the site, at least since Tuxedo Mask was abandoned. lol Granted, I understand the reasoning behind it. "It's ANIMEforum! Why doesn't anyone talk about ANIME?!" But I also understand that there's things besides Anime that people want to talk about. Though I laugh because I remember a time when those who wanted to talk about Anime were told to go to the Anime Room and get out of the Chaos Room. Or told to just stop altogether. I guess that what makes us Chat Regulars what Kaitou+ would say "CircleJerk Elitists". Thankfully we've mellowed out with the new Discord Chat though. It's a bit friendlier these days than back when we still had the RealChat Client.

The Site being stuck in the mud in it's ways and never changing. Yep. That's true. But in all fairness, not every change is good and there's always been a process about things. There's a reason for the process too. Though some of that was never handed down correctly. And it takes a lot of work to recode a whole new site (which by now is needed, especially considering we'd want to make something that lasts for the next few years). Even if we just upgraded to the latest vB, there's still a lot of work behind the scenes that has to be done first. It just sucks that the only people with the ability also are busy with their daily lives (work, family, etc.), and while we could allow others to do the work for us it won't come out like we want or they'll just make things worse (ie: Anime-Forums.com). It's not easy fighting the nostalgia, but it's even harder when people coming in only sit around and regale the way things used to be instead of enjoying what's here now. But that's nothing new, when I first started I saw the ol' Moonies from Tuxedo Mask doing the same from 2000-2004, and then those who came in when I did doing the same from 2006-2012, and even now those who came in around 2008-2012 are doing it. Every so often we have older users come in and cry about not having Jakkibot, Gir, Shikamaru, Neji, Peroth, and Hinata.

And honestly, forums themselves are inherently too slow of a format for today's user. Users today want instantaneous responses and results. That's how sites like Twitter, FB, and others are beating us and forums everywhere. Everything is instant and in your face/feed. Sites at are primarily forums are feeling this everywhere. Some sites are doing better only because of the trash on the side (generally memes) that keeps them busy and running, and the anonymity that allows anyone to post whether a member or not. Forums for other sites like Crunchyroll are doing good, but their forum isn't the primarily source of users for the site. Users are there for something else (streaming or something else), and their forum picks up those that want to talk about stuff along the way. We could do a streaming service, but there's a lot of legal work and it may force people to pay to help ensure the service. As we want to keep things free, and would rather not deal with the legal stuff, we chose not to.

Sadly, these same complaints and arguments have been around for nearly a decade. And we're still here! I guess this Forum is made of sterner stuff.

I don't remember, probably nothing. I think this is my first login in 8 years. Most of my nostalgia is for planetnamek.com since I was a mod there back in 2000 - 2002 before it shut down. Anime boards in general help get me in the mood to watch anime again. Anything to help me forget my joyless job

Hmm. The forum means almost nothing to me now. As previous posters in this thread have stated, this is a place of nostalgia and nothing more.
I login every month or two, just to see the odd thread being created and then log out immediately. Just an easy way to kill a bit of time really.

However, a couple of years back this forum meant a lot to me and I actually spent the majority of the free time I had on it. Funnily enough, I created my account to explore more anime and talk to like-minded people about the topic.
This did happen for a short while, before I got sucked into the game that is wolf (or mafia as it more commonly called). I loved that game to bits and it ended up forming the majority of the memories I got from this place.

My first (mario-themed) game, I forgot that I was playing until not long before it started. I hadn't read the rules on how to play and thought it was a good idea to wing it. I ended up posting on the literal game thread, details of my alliance with DeathBlade. (Luckily we were independants and not mafia, otherwise it would have been a really short game...)

One of the other games that I fondly remember was the megaman game. I was the last wolf remaining and after an unsuccessful bluff, it was getting rather choppy. DenjaX (a dead wolf) had the brilliant idea of turning the independants against the remaining town members. It was working, if I remember correctly and we were one vote away from pulling it all off....

I've been in so many other games and to be honest there's really too many to list all the fun experiences I've had on this forum. Hope everyone is doing well and continue to do so in the future.
(I still hold out hope that everyone bands together and we have one last hurrah, and we play a massive mafia game. It's wistful thinking, I know.)
    Previously Darkfire Knight....

I initially thought this would be a place where queer freaks like me would be welcome and appreciated with no sense of shame for watching teenage low-self-esteemed Japan-file cartoons. I soon found out this place was populated by trolls, angry mods, and major elitist jackholes, so I couldn't relax and post a cutsey thing ever onceinawhile either. So, I had to take matters into my own hand and become an even GRAETER elitist angry jackhole than everyone else summed up on this forum if I wanted some peace around here.
    So I did.
    Now theres nothing left.
Nothing that attract me about this site anymore.
Except maybe the hopes of seing Eris*s boobs one day, which is highly unlikeley, so Ill stick to being a cold, ultra-elitist a-hole anyway.
Thats right, AF! You want me to stop?
    Post Eris* tits or gtfo!
