Read any good books lately?
I read about a 500 page novel every day.
What have you read lately? What did you think of it? Any books you're looking forward to, preferably without pictures?
For example they've got Peace Talks by Jim Butcher coming this summer... I've been waiting five YEARS for that one.
Oh and the new David Wong book Zoey Punches the Future...

Re: Read any good books lately?
Too much verbose trash and not enough profundity in books lately. Unless, in my opinion, it's science-fiction!

Re: Read any good books lately?
I don't do as much reading as I would like. But not too long ago, I read Accidental Presidents by Jared Cohen. If you are a history buff, I totally recommend it. It's about the eight Vice-Presidents who became President when their predecessor died in office.

Manhattan Beach and the Handmaid's Tale

Re: Read any good books lately?
I just purchased The System: Who Rigged it, How We Fix It by Robert Reich. He's one of the few economists I respect because he uses common sense rather than unsupported assumptions and ideology. I will start reading it over the weekend.

Re: Read any good books lately?
The books I have finished:
The Handmaid's tale: I enjoyed it as my favorite genre is dystopian novels and it gave an interesting premise. I'm not really big on 3rd way feminism however, so at times it was differcult to ignore the political undertone.
1984: I had a little bit of trouble following the story line as it seemed a bit repetative to me. That being said, it was pretty good. The concept of "wrong think" was relatively interesting to me in our current political climate. Also a dystopian novel. Slavery is freedom. Freedom is slavery.
Me before you: Pretty decent, it held my attention. It makes you feel feelings. However, I did have an issue with them using the poor girl/rich guy premise. Pretty easy to romantacize a billionare. My main issue with that is that being a parapalegic isn't romantic, it isnt sexy. Theres a lot of messiness involved in it. A lot of mental anquish. I know that the writer tries to convey that through Will's decesions but I still think that its an harmful on going trend to romantacize terminal illnesses and disabilities. Also see: The fault in our stars.

I abhor The Ickabog by the usually brilliant J.K. Rowling.

We've been doing some excerpts from Master and Margarita, by Mikhail Bulgakov. Oh, Stalin, you cheeky devil, you!

Re: Read any good books lately?
I plan on digesting Midnight Sun by Stephenie Meyer, metaphorically speaking. In case no one knows what it's about *Lifts Patrick the Starfish's rock* Oh, hello. Have you been living under here all this time?

Kafka's Last Trial by Benjamin Balint. It deals with the trial over ownership of Franz Kafka's papers.

Yep, that's him and I've enjoyed all of his books.

I am reading a biography of photographer Dorothea Lange. I don't read much fiction.

Re: Read any good books lately?
I read the Count of Monte Cristo, unabridged. I was surprised there was a lesbian couple.

That's the only reason you would read it!

No, I'd planned on it for a while, since seeing V for Vendetta. This was just a nice surprise. Have you read it?

I always thought the translation I read was unabridged, but there were no lesbians!
Crap, now I need to read it again.

Re: Read any good books lately?
It's a good book. I think the main chapter would be the one nearer the back where Dangales and his daughter are working on the newest engagement and she and Louise have already set up a carriage to run pout on her wedding day, though they end up leaving early with her dressed as a boy. Or later when the fiance is running from the police and decides to escape into their room at the inn, finding the two of them in bed together.
I just got "Zoey punches the future in the ****!" by David Wong. So far so good, though this time there doesn't seem to be a specific main villain.

Re: Read any good books lately?
I finished "The Wind-Up Bird Chronical" by Murakami pretty recently. I'd definitely recommend it if you like long books. It's the kind of story where you don't really get it till the end, but it's worth it. Really beautiful and imaginative writing. Right now I'm trying out "Crime and Punishment" but honestly I'm finding it a bit difficult to get through.
