Next Generation of AF Members
I see this forum having a resurgence very soon. Lots of new faces and new memories. I am from the old school, and I'm not sure if I'll be posting in 10-20 years time. What do you see for the next generation here at AnimeForum?
All I gotta' say to the new class to come: you better go on with your cool self!!

There won't be a resurgence unless AF evolves drastically. Again, I probably sound like a mean broken record but it is almost 2022. This forum was dated in 2013. It was even more dated in 2017. 2021-2022? Its a fossil now. This site can no longer compete. Honestly, the admins probably don't care about the site anymore and as I said last year, I can't blame them. Times change and time moves forward. Its better to forget about this "resurgance" that you have been talking about for years. This isn't that kind of site anymore. This site is basically you, pictureguy and clayton. The admins and mods have all mostly abandoned this place.
Just focus on what AF was and be happy its still alive. This will be no resurgence (barring the site evolves or you create hundreds of alts/invite hundreds of people who decide to stay).

Do you have any specific recommendations?
I have no problems with the site.

That isn't your job nor is it my job. The job of building this site back up falls directly on the admins. With that said, I don't blame them. As I said earlier, its 2022 and this site is a ghost of what it used to be and its so dated now that that alone would detract a massive population of users. Its a good thing that you like the site and keep it going, but objectively what does AF offer in 2021 that would make others want to join in?
I mean, the mods have clearly abandoned this place and that isn't a bad thing in my opinion. Most of them probably have a life and I know at least some of them share a similar opinion of me. We dont "hate" AF. For a lot of us, there are good memories. AF helped me find and expand my anime knowledge and provided a lot of fun happenings that I can look back on fondly now. With that said, I can simply see the facts - Its a dated website that has failed to capture the modern anime scene and modern design people are used to now. Its activity was going on a rapid decline for years.
There comes a point though that doing the same thing and expecting a different result is insanity. There have been at least 25 threads of you three discussing what you can do to save AF. Its noble and imo a good thing you care, but I also believe deep down you and clayton see the reality of what this website is.
And anyway, I am almost 29. I don't have that sparkle in my eye to dedicate enough time to a random forum. Hell, I login to myanimelist very rarely. A lot of the older users are my age or older or almost my age and we are busy or do other things.

Specifically, what is wrong with this site? Can you at least answer that?

I mean, its pretty obvious. There isn't just one sole problem, there are many and I even provided a few in my posts above.
The site is extremely dated. I mean myanimelist is pretty dated too, but that website for example at least has a few more modern approaches. This one just doesn't. The format of it is 2005 at best and the banners have not one modern anime that stands out. Its all last generation anime. I think it might have Kill La Kill but that is a 2013 anime and the newest one on there. I think even the most biased person can objectively admit this site is dated and does not cater to new fans or the modern social media platform.
This site is no longer that active. It is basically you, clayton and digimon. Digimon isn't a bad guy at heart and has good intentions, but he radiates a culture of contradiction and is okay with the current website and that tells the admins change isn't needed if their most active current member doesn't see the need for change. Its fine to want AF to stay alive and its a genuinely noble thing, but instead of making it more active, the idea that there is nothing wrong with the site only contradicts the potential of change. People need to work together to patch flaws, but if people who point out the flaws are run out of AF (this goes beyond me), then eventually a status quo is reached. That is why 7 years ago, I kept saying how change needs to happen NOW. I was told activity was rising and for ME to do something to better the website. This is how we reached this statis quo.
Mods have abandoned this site for the most part and some of them share a similar opinion of me. Heck, I have seen mods say the same thing as me. This tells me there is clear division in the top ranks... if the top ranks even exist anymore. Keep in mind, I don't blame mods for abandoning this site nor being busy with life. I also do not blame admins for their reasons.
There are MULTIPLE better platforms now. AF isnt able to compete and thats okay. That is the law of the jungle. Younger and newer and stronger lions eat the old. AF was the lion in 99. Its now the old. I ran a discord with over 10,000 members and it was extremely active. I ate the old. And now I retired. The new lions will eat my server. That is also... the law of the jungle.
And that isnt even all of it. Like, don't get me wrong. You three are good people for keeping this site going. I support your dedication. I just also can't sit here and support the notion that AF is healthy and change isnt needed.

Re: Next Generation of AF Members
You still speak in generalities.
Judging by the number of views, this site gets quite a lot of visitors. The problem is that few participate.

No. No, I didn't. I just layed it out perfectly for you. Few people participate due to all the reasons I just listed. That is some powerful koolaid.

For the 4th or 5th year in a row nothing has. It is still the same routine: "Nothing is wrong with AF. The only issue is the visitors aren't participating for whatever nonexistent reason. AF is the best forum ever! *drinks the koolaid"
5 years later rinse repeat. A tale as old as time. Now its my turn ti enter the cryogenic sleep for another year or two...

Re: Next Generation of AF Members
@Anime Forum : I radiate contradiction? First off, I never said that AF is "fine the way it is" and that I "don't want it to change." I NEVER said that. By curiosity, why do you come here still, Anime Forum? Your sole habit here is to pierce this "dated" forum when really, myanimelist is better, in your opinion. Pray tell, when was the last time anyone here talked about THAT site? I've been there and it's nothing fancy. I am clearly deluded in my dream to promote AF, despite your claim that, in my phrasing, "the wheels have fallen off." You know what page you should take out of my book? LOYALTY. I'm not like you, poisoning feel-good threads with disinterest and bullsh** commentary that there are only three active members here. AF alums come here quite often, on the contrary. You act like you're superior to everyone here, opinion-wise. "Anime Forum is right!" "AF is dead" "Why is Som championing this forum?" AF is for fun times, NOT a user bashing it every time they log in. You have the propensity of doing that a lot. Yeah, I'm a good person, thanks. Like I really need your confirmation that I am or am not. Your garbage personality reeks. I will stand with AF until it closes its doors. And yes. I have hope for AF. If I'm a fool for believing that, then you're a fool for posting negativity. That would make you our fourth active member. Welcome. :)

I think it started with them trying to ban trolls. Arguing with idiots is always something people do here. For a lot of people the internet works as a mask, hiding who you are on the outside so you can be who you are on the inside.
There was one guy here a while back who used to use a Duke Nukem' avatar and he'd argue with everyone about anything. it was great because we were smarter than him and we'd just shoot down his bigoted racist homophobic rants but he'd keep coming back for more. Then i guess they banned him just because people didn't like him, then everyone like him which of course meant everyone agreed with everyone else and felt no need to SAY anything much.
Now I get banning when someone's like just saying the same thing over and over again, putting up spam links, and the like, but not just because a person is immensely unlikable or annoying. (You know who you are). It's like with anime. You need the bad guys. Like in Supermario. If Koopa didn't keep kidnaping the princess Mario would be at the castle fixing the plumbing (he is a plumber, right?) or would run off to rescue daisy from Donkey Kong. Team Rocket keeps Ash's long trips from being too boring. And so on.
Plus some people see someone getting banned for just saying stuff and they feel like they can't say anything either. You really need to let the troll shave their say, even if what they are saying is dumber than Serena with a concussion.

It might help if they pulled back the restrictions on adult material as well. Sex sells after all I say as I point o the Double d character in whatever anime you are currently watching.

For the most part though its two things. One: Very few people invite others to join us here and two: of those who do show up many of them just read the posts and do not reply or offer an opinion. It doesn't help that a lot of time rather than take the time to write stuff out or look things up the posters just write one single sentence and move on like they're doing a text. When in real life you have all the time in the world to voice your opinion.

Those are bots visits and not real visits. I think this has been said to you many times.

Anyway, I am still waiting to hear if those who know what's wrong with this site have any ideas on how to fix it.

Re: Next Generation of AF Members
The charm of this site is how it looks and functions. Hell when I joined in 2012 it was basically not only a ghost town already but also very dated. But again I think that's the charm.
The problem this site faces is the problem that every other site faces: reddit, twitter and youtube are now the platforms everyone, and I mean EVERYONE flocks to.
You can't compete with that at all, and there is nothing much you can do about it. Nobody is going to google "anime forum", make an account, and mess around with this place if they can use their pre existing reddit account to join r/anime, and continue using reddit because it's a site they already are familiar with. I'm not necessarily happy with this (I think reddit is a garbage website- it's super user unfriendly and its UI is garbage especially compared to this website) but it's sadly the truth,
--edit
But I do hope more users join.

and I really really appreciate that. modern webdesign is an absolute travesty. I would love it if this site remains looking this oldschool forever.
