Aha, I know exactly what my problem is. I would use subjunctives in cases when they're grammatically more correct than indicatives. This causes me problems at times, because it could end up making me sound overly formal or hypocritically educated. XD
Example? Here:
Instead of: I wish it was raining.
I'd say: I wish it were raining.
Instead of: If you ate it, you'll be dead by now.
I'd say: If you had eaten it, you would be dead by now.
Can't help it...I took Latin for six years, so subjunctives have become so embedded that I can't seem to avoid them completely. Another thing I got out from my Latin classes is the distinction between "who" and "whom".
Instead of: Who did you see?
I'd say: Whom did you see?
Yes, I've had friends making fun of me for sounding "old" >.>
