I have a few reasons.

1) He has those '1337' glasses.
2) He's a perfect blend of a hero and villian. I love how I can go from hating him to loving him and vice-versa out through all of Evangelion.
3) Also, *Spoilers for the End of Evangelion* I loved his death (If you want to call it that.) It was just so poetic and well, awsome.
