Chaning the Reputation System

All right, since I'm hearing from people that we need to change the reputation system, (and I agree), I have decided to outline the changes that should be made for a fair and useful rep system. Here is my proposal:

We should change the rep bars. Adding extra bars of a different color while changing how many points you need to increase rep power.

Here's what I would suggest doing:

1. Reset reputation

2. change the rep bars to include addtional rep bars with new color.

3. Reconfigure the points system; should go more like this-

-For every 160 points of rep, you recive 1 rep power point
-For every 400 posts you make, you recieve 1 rep power point
-For every 200 days since you've joined, you recieve 1 rep power point

(the rep bar would be updated)

-For every 600 points of rep you recieve 1 rep bar (dark green) [5]
-For every 1000 points of rep you recieve 1 rep bar (light green) [5]
-For every 2500 points of rep you recieve 1 rep bar (yellow) [10]

(The negitive rep bar would work the same way in reverse)

4. Make it so you can only rep 2 people within a 24 hour period, and you can not rep the same person, until you have given reputation to atleast 20 other people. (this ensures that people are not just repping the same people again and again)

5. Give all currently active user 5 repuatation power points. (We'd need something other wise nobody would be able to change rep)

6. Maximum rep power is 555.

After the rep bar is maxed out, for every 7500 point of rep, you get some sort of indicator in your profile that confirms that your rep is that high. (something that would be put under the rep bar and above the other stuff; maybe like a star). This will prevent the inflation of the rep system we see now.


I believe that this should make the reputation system more fair and will be abused far less.

I'm just wondering if the whole repuatation system was reset, then how would users even get rep in the first place? Seemingly to get 600 posts / etc, it may take new users within a year to get that many. Even with a reset it doesn't seem like it would resolve the problem at all, if there really is any major problem.

This seems like a solution looking for a problem. Can you quantify exactly what is wrong with the current system of reputation (other than it being broken?), also elaborate on how this would repair the errors that led to the rep system's current state of brokenness.

The problem lies in that too much power is being distributed in the rep system to easily. If I have just joined this forum and someone with 5000 rep power neg reps me, then I am already "extremely infamous around these parts" from only one rep.

Another problem is that the current system doesn't have as many limits on how much, or how often you can rep people. If two people conspired with eachother, then they could just keep repping one another over and over. By making it so that you have to rep 20 (seperate) member before you can rep the same person again, it helps eliminate that problem.

Also, to prevent people from just handing out rep left and right, (perhaps to cheat the rule stated above) you could only rep 2 people within 24 hours, and would have to wait 24 hours after your last rep before you could rep again. This will also make members be more selective as to who's posts that they rep because it's more limited.

Changing the Points system will also help prevent a member's rep power reach completely unforsaken amounts. Because it's so much harder to aquire rep power, the rate at which a person's reputation will increase will be very slowed. This allows people to know that a person with a very high rep bar really earned it, and wasn't the result of a few reps from members will massive rep power.

Of course, in theory the same problem will occur again, but that will have taken FAR FAR longer before that would happen because it would be so much harder to increase rep power.

I very much think that this should be done.

How would this not happen when your system has been around for as long as the current system has been around?

Does this actually happen frequently? I've never really encountered the problem.

Though, according to my calculations, this doesn't seem to make much difference at all. I would, in your system, start out with 50 rep power. You would get 4. That's more than a 10:1 ratio in rep power. Not really that big a difference from the 50:1 rep power ratio we have now.

Keep in mind it's taken several years to get to this point with the current system. It didn't instantly derail into what we see now.



I did suggest a change long time ago. That you could basically only give rep to say 10 people at any given time. So, your reputation would be the sum of everyone who chooses to give reputation to you. If they cease to give reputation to you and selects someone else to give it to, your reputation goes down a notch, while theirs go up. Everyone's rep power would be the same, and it's not cumulative, so there can be no inflation.

Well, I'm not saying that it's that much different than the current system, but it would allow for a much longer amount of time before it would have to be reset again.

I don't think there's anything wrong with the current reputation system. Also, for those people (who are also older members) who actually care, I don't think they'd like their reputation to be reset. I don't think it's that big of a deal.

I actually agree. Yea rep isn't that important but how is it fair for veterans to lose 3k rep and start over?

If AF really was to reset the Reputation System does that mean every active member would lose all their rep points and would have to gain them back a new way? (No fair!) D:

And anyways I think the Rep System is fine the way it is. o.o;

No new Rep War plz.

The rep system is broken, but it doesn't effect the site as a whole since only a small group of members actually care about it. I doubt the rep system is at the top of AF's to-do list.

Again, this is already in place. I *believe* you can hand out 20 reps a day before youre told you have to wait 24 hours.

So... what are your proposals trying to fix? There's really nothing wrong with the Reputation system. It's just inflated. A reset will fix that, that's all it needs.

It's more just a rate, no repping.

I'm not in favor of a reset, though I think that's just because I like my rep the way it is. At the moment, it's too high for me to care about less than 500 power change. Also, I get to smite idiots, which is always fun.

However, I realize the rate is overinflated. This, however, isn't really avoidable by any means that I've seen devised and/or implemented. It's inevitable. Eris' idea seems interesting, but I don't really like it. Only being able to register your respect for 10 (or any number really) is too limiting. A lot of good members would get left out because they aren't comparatively as good.

Plz no rep wars, there is enough AF Drama to be had.
