If a tree in a forest falls and no one is nearby does it make a sound?
Lol, yeah, I guess so :P
Attachment 64625
Of course it does.
Yes the tree does make a sound, the fact is that no one will be around to hear the tree make a sound is what causes arguements. But unless aliens made it fall in a meadow but used some technology to remove sound from the surrounding area the tree will always make a sound when it falls. >>
Im sure the ant it fell on, made a sound if the tree didn't. :)
Yeah I think it makes a Swishy sound
That's like saying if waves hit a beach and no one is around to hear does it still make a sound.
But I know people who say it doesnt as sound is only recognised when the soundwaves have something to be interpreted by. But by their logic that fails as there are animals around
The answer is no. "Sound" is a psychological quality, which is not the same thing as compressed air waves. A brain must be present in order to register the pattern of compression in the waves, and it is the neural impulses in the brain that give rise to our expereince of sound. No brain, no sound.
But what about the birds and other wildlife living within the forest? Surely they would hear the noise
Why yes, yes it does.
Well yes it would, that is like saying that just because we aren't there will the tree continue to grow. If nobody is around to witness it does life carry on. Its just like Toy Story all over again.
Fair enough Steven21088
yes. if a car drives through an intersection but no one saw it, was it really there? of course it was. lol

Webster definition of sound (Noun)
mechanical radiant energy that is transmitted by longitudinal pressure waves in a material medium (such as air) and is the objective cause of hearing
You were right mostly, you just confused sound and hearing. Hearing involves the brain because it is how we experience sound. Sound does not need the brain to exist.

Yea, lol, ur so right, i think that question is not even supposed to be a question cos it is so obvious that it still makes sound.
Also, if to go into depths of it..then there is ALWAYS someone around, isnt there. It might not be human, but birds, bugs, animals. There is always someone around.
Good answer.
Thats what i believe also.
Hearing needs brain to exist, sound doesn't.
Theres avalances in mountains triggered by resonance created by soundwaves. To my knowledge snow (avalanche) does not have a brain (correct me if im wrong, lol), yet it reacts to sound.
Point made.
