Re: The Promised Neverland
I just watched the whole thing totally free and legally of course.
It's very dark. It can get a little slow at times but stick it out, the final episodes definitely pick up the pace. If you're like me and like mind games and character building this show won't be slow to you at all but my husband is more action based so he didn't care much for the bulk of the show but he still was intrigued enough to watch it through.
Re: The Promised Neverland
I like it dark. I also like, pardon my language, what I call mind-f*** anime (Lain, Perfect Blue. Paranoia Agent). Is TPN like that?
Re: The Promised Neverland
I haven't seen either of those anime (although Paranoia Agent has been suggested to me) but it definitely deals with intelligence levels higher than a normal 12 y/o should be able to handle but due to the circumstances that relate to their existence they can figure it out if that makes sense. I don't really want to go into it too much because possible spoilers. In a way, it's sort of like Made in Abyss where these kids are too smart for their own good, but that's good in it's own way?

Re: The Promised Neverland
Going into the series, i knew virtually nothing about it. I hadn't read the manga or even seen a trailer. After watching the first episode i had high hopes that this would be a great psychological thriller / horror, but boy oh boy was i mistaken.
I found it strange that after building a dark and mysterious setting in the first episode, the story took a sharp turn, opting to kill all the tension and dread. The show never really recovered in my opinion and every time i saw an opportunity for a dark twist, the story took the most bland path possible. The main characters were interesting and the reason i finished the show, but all the potential was wasted
If you're looking for something similar to Monster or Paranoia agent, this series definitely isn't it
Re: The Promised Neverland
Last night was episode 3. I didn't watch, but recorded it for later today.
Anyway, I learned a long time ago not to give up on a series after one, two, or three episodes. Many anime series take a few episodes to really get started. Blue Gender is an example. After two or three episodes, I thought the series was going nowhere and gave up on it. Later I kept hearing what a great series it was, so I gave it a second chance. Sure enough, things started going around episode 5 or 6.

That's a great philosophy! I remember dropping Full metal alchemist Brotherhood after 3-4 episodes because i didn't like the first series and Brotherhood seemed identical. A couple of years later i sat down, pushed past the first 8 episodes and now it's one of my all time favorites.
And this particular series is definitely worth the watch even if it veers in an unexpected direction. It still has potential and i'll be checking out the second season when it releases next year

Enough characters survive for a second season?
Re: The Promised Neverland
Who knows...
All i'll say is that there seems to be a second season slated for 2020
Re: The Promised Neverland
It's a fantastic show imo. It doesn't rely on your usual jump scares or outright gore that most horror anime does, but is instead very suspenseful and atmospheric. I highly recommend it if psychological horror is your thing.
Re: The Promised Neverland
Psychological horror is my thing. Ever see Perfect Blue?

I haven't, but the name sounds familiar. If it had something to do with an idol, I've definitely seen clips of it.

Mima is one-third of a popular girl singing group. But she is about to leave the group for a new career as an actress. Only this will require a drastic image change, and someone does not want Mima to change her image. Is it a crazed fan? Or maybe even Mima herself?
I like to call these mind-f*ck anime, since they f*ck with your mind. Maybe I will start a thread on those.
Boogiepop Phantom is another mental torture story, only you have several characters getting their heads screwed with. It's kind of like Paranoia Agent, only much, much darker.

I'm sure this can be saved for another thread but...meh. I've read the Boogiepop... light novels? Really enjoyed those but haven't had time for the anime. Is it comparable? Also, I noticed you haven't mentioned Higurashi - have you read that manga/seen that anime?
Re: The Promised Neverland
@PictureGuy I've definitely seen clips of Perfect Blue then, it's on my list of crap to eventually watch. Same with Boogiepop, now that the 2019 one seems to be wrapped up.
Psyche horror is definitely a fun genre I've been meaning to watch more of in the anime world, even if most of it seems to end up either super tropey or filled with cheap jump scares.

I have heard something about a new Boogiepop. Is it a redo of Phantom or is it based on another one of the books? It would be hard to repeat the original with the dark, almost colorless artwork and a story not told in chronological order. I'm afraid I may be disappointed, just like I was disappointed by the two new FLCL series. It's hard to follow a pure classic.

I haven't read the Boogiepop books, but I understand the anime is based on one of them. There was also a live action Boogiepop movie, which was not too bad.
Higurashi I have not seen.
Re: The Promised Neverland
@PictureGuy From what I can tell, it's a remake. It isn't listed as a sequel on MAL, and of the two episodes I've seen, it looks like each episode may be from a different perspective. The 2019 one is Boogiepop Wa Warawanai, and I've seen the English title listed as both Boogiepop Doesn't Laugh and Boogiepop & Others.
Re: The Promised Neverland
I think Boogiepop and Others was the name of the live action movie, which shared some elements with Boogiepop Phantom.
We've gotten :offtopic:
But it has been a good conversation, hasn't it?
