Words that are difficult to pronounce or just strange in general.
For some reason I feel strange when I say the world rural. I have a tendency to want to roll the R's (maybe because I'm Greek?) XD
What words give you trouble, if any and/or what are some of the weirdest words you've come across?
Here's a link to some very odd words (half of which I've never even heard of!) http://www.worldwidewords.org/weirdwords/
I got a kick out of the word "RANNYGAZOO" hah.

Back in middle school, antidisestablishmentarianism was a very weird word to me.

I agree! (o.O) The funny thing is, I'm an English major and I'm not all that sure how to pronounce that. XD

Wow, that's half as long as my last name. Can you believe it's 12 letters long? :o Lol.

Re: Words that are difficult to pronounce or just strange in general.
My name. Amber. You don't pronounce it the American way, but you use the same -am as you use in "Vietnam" So I'm (Vietn)Amber.

Re: Words that are difficult to pronounce or just strange in general.
Sometimes... I pronounce things with the weirdest accents ever because I try to speak before I know what I'm saying, I also tend to miss-spell words because of the phonetics or somethings. >_>;

Gonna follow that up with my last name. For some reason people like to replace the starting o with a u so you get un instead of on.

Re: Words that are difficult to pronounce or just strange in general.
I thought we were talking about words that are difficult to pronounce, as in tongue-twisting words?
Anyway, I always have trouble pronouncing the word "aunt". I find myself switching back and forth between ant and ahnt. I learned it as ant in New Jersey, but after I moved to Maryland, everyone says ahnt.
Okay, fine, maybe that one wasn't exactly "difficult" to pronounce. How about the word "twelfths"? I just let everything slide together and say "twels" instead, to save my tongue from any potential tangling lol.

Re: Words that are difficult to pronounce or just strange in general.
One of my friends is a writer and I was talking to her by email and she used the word 'dowager' and I had no idea what it meant. So that was one of the weirdest words I've ever heard. If you're wondering what it means go to en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dowager

That's pretty. (:]) I like the way your name is pronounced. Sometimes people pronounce my first name wrong. It's Eva, but most people say Eh-va or A-va when it's actually Ee-va

Haha, I know what you mean - that happens to me sometimes too. (XD)

It doesn't necessarily have to be a long word. I agree that the word aunt can be tricky. Ah-nt makes a whole lot more sense seeing as there's a U in there. It's awfully mean to call your aunt an ant, isn't it? (XD) Haha, I'm not even gonna start talking about twelfths. That's not a fun word to say. At all. (D:]

Haha. Dowager? I'm a writer and this is the first time I've heard of such a word. (o.O)

Lol yeah, it's a pretty rare word... not many people use it these days. The writer I talk to is waaay older than even my parents so, I'm assuming they used that word back in the old days. But yeah, I wonder... where do all these weird words come from? O.o

Re: Words that are difficult to pronounce or just strange in general.
Well since I'm romanian I have a lot of trouble saying some words, especially those that have "th" in the composition. I also can't say "natural" without sounding weird.

Re: Words that are difficult to pronounce or just strange in general.
Strange word: Coolly. It's one of those words that seemed misspelled yet it's spelled correctly. It's "cool" + "ly".
Hard to pronounce: Well I know there are harder words to pronounce but only "catechesis" comes to mind. Just learned it earlier. It's from a Greek word. The "e"'s are not pronounced as long e's.

Re: Words that are difficult to pronounce or just strange in general.
Psycho is a difficult word to spell, and I usually am quite the good speller. Another word people always complain about me messing up is "Probably", I pronounce it "Prolly" due to my occasional and rare southern drawl.

Re: Words that are difficult to pronounce or just strange in general.
Alot of words that isn't in my own language is hard for me to say in the beginning. Especially languages that isn't as "hard" as my own where we put alot of the sound on the "hard letters" like a b t exc. Talking in france or in chinese where the language is more "soft" is a real struggle for me sometimes when I try. But yeah.... I guess my problem is the problem for most people. Your own language is easy but everyone elses is some strange gibberish. :)

Strange words? hm...... I don't come to think about any right now.. But I know some people think that swedish words is "funny" sometimes.
Here is btw a link to a thread where people talk about "strange swedish words" http://www.communityofsweden.com/forum/topic/?topic=316
Apperently the word "jordgubbar" (strawberry) is a very very very strange word since jordgubbar means earth men. (earth + men = jord + gubbar).
Or how about the word vegetables? In swedish: grönsaker, "green stuff". ;) green/grön stuff/saker
Did you know btw that we swedes have a word that you pronunce my breathing in instead of out? Just breathing air in really fast so it makes a "hooooo" sound means: okey *thumbs up*
How about this famous line from Star Trek: First Contact
"Borg? Sounds Swedish!" (after awhile) "Definitely not Swedish" xD
"sounds swedish" turtle style!

Re: Words that are difficult to pronounce or just strange in general.
Fundamentalism, Egalitarianism, erroneously, exemplification, facetious, permeation, arrhythmia, and euphorically.
I use a few of these on a daily basis in conversation. No one understands me; it's annoying, really.
There are more, but I'm busy at the moment.
