Converse with others in Japanese!

  1. "ことです" in this sentence?

Here is the sentence: つまり、[深刻な嘘をつくのは苦手だけど、害のない出鱈目を言うのはけっこう好きだ]ということです。 'In brief, you could say "I'm not very good at telling serious lies, but I quite like telling harmless nonsense."' Is 'you could say' a good translation of ということです? How would you translate it personally? And why...

  2. "But" and "Because"

OK, so I've noticed in Japanese there are A LOT of words for "but" and "because". I was wondering what the difference, if any, was. Here are the words I've learned: But: が けど しかし でも Because:

  3. "I hope that..."

How do you say "I hope that..." in Japanese? It's probably the only major grammar point I have yet to learn, but it seems to come up a lot and I want to know how to say it without splicing English into my Japanese. For example, "I hope you had fun today" or "I hope you have a safe trip home" or...

  5. "Or"

So in Japanese we learned that if you want to say "is A B or C?" you say "AはBですかCですか". However, what if your "or" statement isn't central to what you're saying? Say, for example, you have a girl friend and want to ask her if she has a boyfriend. She's from place A but lives in place B, and you...

  6. "wo" or "o"?

Hi I read in another thread that "even though the particle "wa" is spelled "ha", it's bad practise to say "ha" when you're typing in a place like this, because the word "ha" by itself means something" so I will use "wa" in the future but what about "wo" or "o", wich is best to use? (of course...

  13. A Few Questions

    1) Has anyone seen Oreimo? I noticed Saori has a slang when she talks. Instead of using normal honorifics "chan" or "kun", she uses "shi", like "Kiririn-shi". 19. A question about a sentence.

In this sentence, do I assume that there is a implicit(である) after 日本人 or の particle is a form of copula? The で for 米国人で is a connective だ, so there should be a kind of ending verb for this te sequence after 日本人. 米国人で奥さんが日本人の人を知っている I know an American whose wife is Japanese.
