I've been playing online chat-based RPGs since I was 12 or 13. Played WoW for a few years, but I wasn't a hardcore player and all my friends outleveled me. Warcraft 3 is more of an RTS, although admittedly with RPG elements (hell, the Orc campaign in TFT is more or less an actual RPG). If you want to check out some good CRPGs (computer RPGs), look for Fallout 1, 2, 3, and New Vegas (Especially 1 and 2), the Baldur's Gate series, Planescape: Torment, the Mass Effect series, and Dragon Age. They're all pretty good, although the first two Fallouts and Planescape: Torment are my favorites.

Heh. It's actually from another RPG I used to play... I'm terrible at coming up with names, and a friend helped me get "James Cannon"... who was immediately dubbed Jimmy the Cannon. I've kind of grown fond of it since then.
