View Full Version : If you had to live with one piece of technology...

If you had to live with only one piece of technology in your home, what would it be?

Just to make things a bit easier and permit discussion here, you are already granted certain home basics, including electricity, running water, a toilet, internet connection etc..

The definition of "technology" as applied in everyday life can be ambiguous, so for the sake of some orientation in this discussion, here's an extracted definition of the word "technology" as written in the Oxford English Dictionary, which you can use as an anchor if you so wish.

technology n. (pl. technologies)
1. The application of scientific knowledge for practical purposes.
2. Machinery developed from this.

As you can see, the above definition collectively qualifies almost every man-made item as technology; this goes also for items that don't necessarily fall under the sub-definition "2.", but are nonetheless products of technology, and therefore fall under the sub-definition "1.". In this sense, items that don't necessarily require electricity to function can also be considered as technology, including clothes, tools, instruments, and so on.

As for me, if I had to live with one piece of technology in my home it'd be without a doubt, the microwave! It's cheap, fast, and reliable. For about 4 years it was the main piece of technology I relied on for living when I first moved into my own apartment - not just because it merely meant cooked food, but because it gave me more affordable options in buying food. And guess what? After about a decade, I still have that microwave!

My . . . computer?
Unless a toilet is considered a piece of technology.

Well, technically speaking, basically everything we surround us with is technology. From clothes, to furniture, to cooking utensils. That being said, a knife would probably be the most useful in hunting and foraging in the woods.

My laptop IF AND ONLY IF internet was provided. It can basically do everything a phone can as far as video chat/calling people. Skype ftw?! yeah less convenient as far as portability compared to a cell but allows you to do SOOOOOO much more.

I hope this refers to modern technology as I would rather not have to choose between a fridge, stove or toilet.
If it's modern tech, I would choose my cell phone. It's way more convenient to talk to anyone from wherever (as long as there is satellite coverage).

A computer. There's other things I can live with, but you can do so much on a computer. THIS IS of course assuming that electricity, and cable and etc are around.

And that's why I said electricity. It's a technological innovation that so many pieces of technology rely on. If today's devices didn't exist, I'm sure we'd have devices that are equivalent to those... as long as electricity exists.

I personally think that I'd choose a lever. Not just to be rebellious but if I only had one piece of technology to save my hide in the world a lever assuming it was a size that gave it a lot of functionality would serve me better than anything else. Of course this puts me at the extreme end of this scale. =P

Hmmm... I'd choose a laptop with those USB sticks that provide internet connection (consider them as one). Because I believe that a laptop has it all, like cameras and whatnot. And I don't really use my phone much.

Actually, I have to agree with you on the usefulness of levers since there's been many a time I could have used one! At least levers are handy in the Resident Evil games... Well, they're technically called cranks there, but still, same principle... Got a be decent lever though... remember what happened to that lever in the film, Armageddon? XD

My computer. I can't manage my studies without it.
Besides, if the internet is working, then I can watch tv-shows on it, watching news, and calling friends via Skype and such.
And even if I don't have internet connection, I can still play games on it.

The computer is all I'll need. :)
It's like a bunch of different other techologys in one. Brilliant!
