How long do you leave your computer on for? Or, is it on all the time? And why?



I usually have my computer on for around 7-8 hours on weekdays and like 12 hours on weekends, especially for those downloads :) I learned some offices and places never turn their computers off, and computers are meant to be on for specific reasons(like updating and stuff), and that it's more taxing turning the computer on and off rather than just keeping it on. But to me, I'd rather have mine off when I'm sleeping.

I never turn my computer off >.< lol. The reason for this is because my brother told me not to. He built my computer, and there is a light that wont go off when you turn the computer off, so I have to leave it on all the time so it doesn't burn up inside. I have to sleep with a bright blue flash shining in my room. XD

I turn it off before going to sleep, around 11 pm or 12 am but it is turned on all day, the main reason is because I always forget to do something before turning it off and I don't like to wait like 2 minutes after I turn it back on to start. So what I do is set it in mode of hibernation when i am not using it, and when I come back to use it, all I have to do is move the mouse or press a key to have it right the way it was ^^

So my PC is actually turned on almost all day, and turned off during my bed time...

Of course, this requires good maintenance of the system and the inside -- I vacuum/dust and generally clean it out once every 6 months. It's set to go on screensaver every 30 minutes.

As long as I do that and frequently restart/shut it down once in while, it's fine and runs smoothly.

Well it isn't really bad for your computer if it stays on. And my computer goes into sleep mode when I don't use it so my computer's components cool down and my electric bill isn't as high as you'd think it would be.

Personally, in my belief, whether you use it or not it will still age. If your computer is idle its not using anything or moving any parts, except electricity, and even then "vampire appliances" still drain electricity when off. Turning it off only really applies to overheating or if you are worried about image burn.

I turn my computer off once a week to clean the filters and negate the dust build-up. All I need to do is flip off the LEDs and adjust some fan speeds and it's dead silent so no worries there. If I see any particular wear and tear in the parts I'll adjust my habits, but so far so good.

About 4-5 hours on my work days and all the time through weekends and shut off when I go to bed, but if I'm downloading stuff, will keep it on all night until it's done.
